Jill was born in Worland, Wyoming on May 18, 1952 to Dorothea and Floyd Heitz. Her family moved to Houma, Louisiana while she was in high school. While her family eventually returned to Wyoming, Jill remained in Louisiana to attend college. She met her future husband, Ronald, in a computer programming class at Louisiana State University, when Ron drew her attention making flip books out of a stack of computer punch cards. They married on December 22, 1973 and spent the early years of their marriage in New Orleans, where Jill taught mathematics and Ron began his career in medicine. Jill gave birth to their first child, Brendan in 1977. Their second child, Meghan, was born in 1978. After Ron completed his medical residency in New Orleans, they moved to Russellville, Arkansas, where their third child, Colin, was born in 1982.
In 1985, Jill and Ron moved to Temple, Texas. Jill returned to school, graduating from Mary Hardin Baylor in 1993 with a master’s degree and then started her second career as an educational diagnostician. She made many cherished friends and touched many lives over the course of her career working at schools in the Bell County Cooperative for Exceptional Children from 1993 to 2012. As a diagnostician, she assessed children to determine the need for special educational services and advocated on their behalf to help them attain their full potential.
Jill enjoyed challenging her mind with mystery novels, sudoku puzzles, and playing board games with her family. She was a talented craft maker, always eager to learn new techniques, and a skilled seamstress. Over the years, she made many treasured costumes for both her own children and their classmates. She also created quilts that featured photographs of family members in each panel, combining her passion for quilting with her role as the family historian.
Jill loved nothing more than spending time with her family. She enjoyed trips to visit her family in Wyoming and her in-laws in Louisiana. In 2007, her family grew with the birth of her first grandchild, Scarlett. In 2009, her second grandchild, Rowan, was born. They were joined by a third grandchild, Ash, in 2014.
She is survived by her husband, Ron, children, Brendan, Meghan (Shannon), and Colin (Sara), grandchildren, siblings Floyd, Norma, and Becky, sisters-in-law, Bootsie and Kathy , brother-in-law, Phillip, and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Nancy, her father and her mother.
