Lelia Louise Nehring Bane of Troy passed away on May 19, 2015 in Temple, Texas. She was born December 3, 1920 in Waco, Texas to Elizabeth and Adolph Nehring. She grew up initially in Waco until moving to the Nehring family farm nearby in Rosenthal where she did her share of the work picking cotton and corn and, best of all, gathering eggs from the hen houses. After spending her early high school years at Rosenthal School, she graduated from Waco High School in 1938. Lelia's involvement with the 4-H Club and the County Home Demonstration program opened the opportunity for her to attend Southwest Texas State Teachers College in San Marcos (now Texas State University). There she met a local boy, Robert James (Bob) Bane. When World War II broke out, Bob joined the U.S. Navy and was stationed in San Diego where he and Lelia were married on June 3, 1943 in the First Methodist Church. Lelia and Bob gave birth to their first child, Nona Marie, in May of 1944 at the San Diego Naval Hospital. Following victory in the Pacific, Bob, Lelia and Nona returned to Texas, initially to San Marcos and shortly thereafter to Waco where Bob began a long career with HEB Grocery Company. In 1954, they gave birth to a son, Robert Douglas Bane. HEB transferred the family to Temple in 1959 where, after raising her children, Lelia went to work for HEB's Texas Gold Stamp Company. She retired from HEB in 1989 and the couple spent many fulfilling years of country living near Troy until Bob's death in 2010. Lelia was a dedicated wife and mother who loved family gatherings, clown costumes at HEB events, gardening and extending kindness to everyone around her. She is survived by: her daughter, Nona Bane Cole of Troy; her son, Robert Douglas Bane of Temple; three grandchildren, Michael Leigh Turner of Austin, Lauren Elizabeth Bane of Austin and Leahann Bane McLaughlin of Tucson, Arizona and three great grandchildren, Lennon McCartney Turner, Kendall Harper McLaughlin, and Emery Paige McLaughlin. Services will be held at St. John United Church of Christ in Robinson, Texas at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 22, 2015 with Rev. Scott Spence officiating. Burial will follow at Robinson Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. John United Church of Christ, 100 S. Robinson Dr., Robinson, Texas 76706.
