What a glorious day July 19,1928 must of been when August Houy and Lydia Fischgrabe Houy welcomed their third child Lydia LaVerne into the world. She joined her brother Daniel and her sister Frances into the family and now the family was complete.
LaVerne grew up in the Moody area where she attend Moody school and was also a member of the Moody Leon Methodist Church. After graduating from Moody High School, she attended Austin Business School in Austin, Texas
On November 7, 1946, she married Julius (Jay) Coufal. Together they raised 8 children: Wesley, Otis, Donnie, Ronnie,Janis, David, Richard, and Deanna. Living in Moffat, the family attended Moody Leon Methodist Church. LaVerne was a member of the Women’s Society of Christian Services, Sunday school classes, and American Business Women’s Association. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, canning, cooking, and most of all her Lord and Savior and her family. Her home was always open to everyone. There was no telling how many of the boys friends would come out of their room in the mornings to be greeted with a smile and a big breakfast.
LaVerne began working at the City of Temple Street department in the early 70s. After 31 years of marriage, Julius passed away from a heart attack. Still having children at home, LaVerne continued working for the street department.
Laverne’s family was her pride and joy. She loved being together with them at family gatherings, watching them play sports, showing at the livestock shows, attending weddings, welcoming new babies, and going on vacations. She loved cooking for them and praying for them every night before bed as she mentioned each of them and ask the Lord to protect them. She would say her best gift was time spent with her family.
LaVerne entered Cornerstone in September 2017 after a fall. A month into rehab, she suffered a bout of pancreatitis and was never able to regain strength and return home. With her contagious smile and sweet laugh she soon became the queen of Cornerstone as we liked to call her. Her room was decorated for the holidays and her birthdays! She even dressed up and sported the holiday outfits. She was loved and cared for by so many during her three year stay. The family would like to especially thank A’Jay for loving and caring for her and coaxing her to eat when no one else could. Caylee, Faith, Jerome for loving her and sitting with her and most of all sharing your children with her. Andrea thank you for sharing Dr Peppers with her. Nurses James and Nancy for knowing mom so well that you knew there was a problem before it ever got out of hand.
We all have special memories that we will forever hold in our hearts. Although there is sadness on Earth , we rest assured knowing that there was a huge celebration in Heaven as she was welcomed by her Lord and Savior, her husband Julius, her son Wesley, her son Don, her granddaughter Leah, her parents August and Lydia Houy, her brother Daniel and her sister Frances along with a host of many other family and friends that have gone on before.
LaVerne left behind to carry on her legacy: Otis and wife Mary, Ronnie and wife Lisa, Janis and husband Paul, David and wife Becky, Richard and wife Kehm and Deanna and husband Tom. LaVerne was also blessed with 27 grandchildren, 42 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandson.
When asked what advice she would leave:
“Be kind and be good people”
Well done my good and faithful servant.
