Maxine Smithson

Mrs. Maxine Smithson, age 78, of Temple died Monday August 11, 2008 in a Woodlands, Texas hospital. Services for Mrs. Smithson will be at 10:00AM Friday August 15, 2008 at the First Baptist Church in Temple with Rev. Theiss Jones and Rev. Martin Knox officiating. Burial will be at Bellwood Memorial Park. Mrs. Smithson was born February 17, 1930 in Salem, Missouri the daughter of Jewell and Leona Brooks Martin. She married Luther Smithson June 10, 1951 in St. Louis, Missouri. Mr. Smithson preceded her in death in 2000. She had been a Temple area resident for 46 years. She was a longtime active member of the First Baptist Church in Temple having served the church in many different areas. She was a 1962 graduate of the University of Mary Hardin Baylor. She taught at Troy High School from 1962 until 1967 then at Belton High School from 1967 until 1994. She is survived by two sons, Marty Smithson of Houston and Eddie Smithson of Baytown; two daughters Gwendelyn Mellott of Houston and Linda Kovach of the Woodlands; two sisters Vesta Porter of St Louis and Verniece Dawn of Tampa, Fl.; one brother Owen Martin of Oklahoma City, OK as well as 11 grandchildren. A visitation will be held from 6 until 8 PM Thursday August 14, 2008 at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home of Temple. The family requests that memorials be made to the First Baptist Church of Temple 102 West Barton Avenue Temple, Texas 76501.
