

Robert Victor Burton Self was born February 27, 1929 in Havre, Montana to Clifford Edward and Florence May (Atkinson) Self. He departed this life on March 16, 2015 at the Central Texas State Veterans Home at the age of 86. The family moved to Springfield, CO until his mother's re-marriage to Leonard Schroder during WWII, at which time they moved to the Campo, CO area. He attended school at Springfield and was on the high school basketball team that won state; graduating in 1948. He joined the United States Air Force in 1948 and received an honorable discharge on March 22, 1952. He married Ada Mae (Konkel) on November 30, 1951. To this union a family was created with the adoption of Danny Dean and Dixie Lee and the birth of Twila Rose in 1952. After being discharged from the military the family moved to Vilas, CO where Vic was involved in farming. He quit farming in 1963 and became a crop duster. Vic loved flying and retired in 1991. He was awarded the Colorado Agricultural Aviation Association outstanding service award in 2004. In February 2006 he suffered a massive stroke and moved to Temple, Texas to live with his daughter Twila and her husband Steve. Rather than being a stroke "victim" Vic was truly a survivor. Vic is survived by his sister Mary Brower of Tulsa, OK; son Danny (Kathy) Self of Springfield, CO; daughter Twila (Steve) Westphal of Temple, TX; grandchildren Shane (Robin) Self of Amarillo, TX; Stefanie (Todd) Vincent of Temple, TX; Jason (Stacey) Westphal of Georgetown, TX; Traci (Nader) Wadie of Austin, TX; LeeAnn (Michael) Lucas of Cheyenne, WY; Erin (Forrest) Rothleutner of Gillette, WY; Catherine (Michael) Ankenbruck of Denver, CO and 18 great grandchildren, caregiver and friend Eva Flores. He is preceded in death by his parents, Florence May Schroder and step-father Leonard; father Clifford Self, brothers John M. Self; Leroy (Bill) Self; James P. Self; Don E. Self; sister, Anne Judah and daughter Dixie Lee Self Kotz. A celebration service will be held Saturday, March 21 at 11:00 A.M. at Foundation United Methodist Church, 10751 West Adams Avenue, Temple, TX. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the National Stroke Association, 9707 East Easter Lane, Ste#B, Centennial, CO 80112.
