
Rufus "Bud" Hurley, age 82, of Temple and formerly of McAllen died Thursday May 19, 2011 in a Temple nursing center. Services will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, May 23, 2011 at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen with Rev. Robert Mattson officiating. There will be no set time for visitation. Mr. Hurley was born on October 23, 1928 in Calvin, LA to the late Sidney Hurley and Tava Durbin Hurley. He attended Calvin High School and he joined the Air Force in 1947 and was honorably discharged after 4 years of service. Bud then attended the Huey P. Long trade school in Winnfield, LA. After graduating, he moved to Delhi, LA with his family where he met Betty Ruth Higdon. Bud and Betty were married on February 25, 1951 in Delhi. Bud worked for Sun Oil Gas Plant as a distillation operator and became foreman. He was later transferred to offshore platforms for 7 years before retiring. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #215 and Elks Lodge in Delhi, LA. Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Betty Hurley of Temple; a daughter, Renee Vanderpool and husband Gary of McAllen; two grandchildren, Robert Lee Vanderpool and Paul Bryant Vanderpool, both of McAllen; and sister, Glenda Faye Madden of Seattle, WA. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society.
