He was born on April 17, 1941 in Somerville, Texas the son of R.C. and Laverne (Calhoun) Houston.
Sammy graduated from Temple High School in 1959 and began working for the Santa Fe Railroad at the age of 18, retiring after many years of service in 2002. On March 25, 1961 he married Norma Jean Gilmore He was a member of First Christian Church, the Elks Lodge #138 in Temple, and enjoyed collecting railroad memorabilia and digging up and collecting arrowheads.
He is survived by his wife Jean Houston of Temple, 2 sons Randall Houston and wife Kathi of Belton, and Sam B. Houston, Jr. and wife Karen of Arkansas, and three grandchildren, Scott, Katilynn, and Blake Houston.
