Samuel R. Jones

Samuel Robert Jones, age 82 of Temple, passed away Thursday morning, March 26, 2015 at his home. Services will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, March 28 at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home with Rev. Gary Baxley officiating. Burial will follow at Bellwood Memorial Park. Visitation will be 5:00 - 7:00 PM Friday at the funeral home. Mr. Jones was born December 23, 1932 in Temple to Lewis O. and Ola Kegley Jones. He graduated from Temple High School and attended Texas Tech University in Lubbock on a football scholarship. In 1951, he married Jean Odom. Sam began his hospital career at Scott & White Hospital as an apprentice X-Ray technician. He was assigned by Scott & White to the Santa Fe Hospital where he later became a regular employee of the Santa Fe Hospital and the Director of their X-Ray Dept. He served as Director of numerous departments before becoming Assistant Administrator. Upon the amalgamation of the two hospitals he was assigned to Scott & White where he retired in 1992. Sam was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Deborah Jean Jones, his eldest son, Samuel Robert Jones, Jr., his parents, an older brother, Lewis O. Jones, Jr. and a sister, Ola Maye Liles. He is survived by his wife, Jean; three children, Sally Jones Schmalstieg and husband, Steve of Sinton, Steven Chad Jones of Temple and Timothy Scott Jones of Brady and eight grandchildren; Samuel Christian Jones and wife, Krista of Rogers, Chad Weston Jones and wife, Danielle of Temple, Tracilyn Jones of New York City, Michael Aaron Fellabaum of Austin, Steven Chad Jones, Jr. of Temple, Jeffrey Robert Jones and wife, Kayla of Austin, Kathryn Jean Sullivan of Austin and Brittany Dianne Jones of Temple and three great-grandchildren, Cole Douglas, Taylor Nicole and Jake Robert. Also surviving are two sisters, Dorothy Fourmigue and Posey Martin both of Temple and a host of nieces, nephews and many beloved friends.
