Wayne was not the kind of person you could sum up neatly. He was smart, stubborn, endlessly curious, and often impossible to pin down. He had a knack for fixing things. He enjoyed flying drones and was always looking for a treasure, educating himself on what he might have picked up at a storage sale. He had a sharp mind and a restless energy that pushed him to explore and try new things - or the same thing, just in a new way - sometimes for better, sometimes not.
A lifelong Green Bay Packers fan and a die-hard enthusiast of chocolate - especially brownies, Wayne had a way of being unapologetically himself, even when it wasn’t easy for anyone else. He wasn’t always an effortless person to be around, but he cared deeply—often in his own way—and showed up when it mattered most. In the best moments, Wayne’s humor and playfulness, was noticed by all around him, sometimes because you were the target of his jokes. Affectionately referred to as someone “whose pendulum swings far in both directions,” you didn’t always know which Wayne you would get, but that’s what made him unique.
Wayne grew up in Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey, then lived in Beaumont, Texas; Pagosa Springs, Colorado; and finally, Harker Heights, Texas. Each place brought its own challenges and lessons, and he carried those with him.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents; his father, Jeffrey Alen Straway; his biological brother, Alex Straway; and his brothers through marriage, Joshua and Jason Medina.
Wayne is survived by his mother, Ann Marie Medina, and stepfather, Jesse Medina; his daughters, Lilyana Straway, Alex Straway, and Marjorie Penland; his sister, Megan Straway; brothers through marriage, Jesse Medina Jr., Matthew Medina, and Mark Arredondo as well as his sister through marriage, Corinna Medina. He is also survived by nieces Annabella Grimm and Aubree Straway as well as many other nieces and nephews through marriage, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
