"Al" was born on 10/7/1928 in his home in Long Branch, NJ to Fannie & Freddie DeMenna (Alfred Sr), then grew up in the old neighborhoods of Newark, NJ. Throughout his long life, God had blessed him as a gifted Mechanical Engineer with old-world Carpenter skills (inherited from his dad), a good Husband, a loving Father and an avid Fisherman & Sailor.
After serving his Country in the U.S. Army, he received his Engineering degree from Newark College of Engineering and started his successful career with Worthington Pumps in Harrison, NJ. He later received his Graduate Degree from Upsala College, his Professional Engineer certification and then worked as Project Managers for most of the large Engineering firms in the NYC area; Ebasco, Dravo, Bechtel, Burns & Roe, Gibbs & Hill; where he traveled extensively worldwide, was respected for his great experiences and for mentoring young Engineers.
After many years of living in Verona, NJ and working in New York City, Al and his wife, Betty, retired and moved to Toms River, NJ; where they lived till Betty passed away in 2002 and Alfred passed away on Saturday, 3/3/2012.
His God-given gifts on Engineering are evident in the building of a self-designed, homemade Plywood Boat, the Lady-B (in memory of his wife) at age 77. He intended to sail all the way to Florida in January 2006... but settled for a berth at the Coast Guard Station in Atlantic City, NJ after getting stuck in a squall. He spent a lot of time with his son Gerald and grandson Thomas going out on Lady-B attempting to catch fish; but always enjoying their time out on the water.
Alfred leaves behind his loving family; Gerald, his son and Veronica, his daughter-in-law; Gwendolyn, his former daughter-in-law and 3 grandchildren; Katie, Maggie (with her husband Jonathan Drouillet) & Thomas DeMenna; and Theresa, his daughter and Joseph Holler, his son-in-law and 5 grandchildren; Joseph Jr., Annmarie, John, Joanne and Mary. He wife, Elizabeth Anne DeMenna (nee: Cogliano) died on 4/20/2002.
