Bernice Macchia Latwis, 78, of Berkeley Township, New Jersey, passed away on September 19, 2026. Born on November 28, 1947, in Bayonne, NJ, Bernice was the daughter of the late Rocco and Evelyn Macchia.
Bernice dedicated much of her life to education. She earned her bachelor's degree in teaching and spent her career as an educator. She was hardworking, dedicated, and took pride in the work she did and the students she taught throughout her career.
Above all else, Bernice loved her family. She was married to the love of her life, John, who predeceased her in February 2026. Together, they built a life centered around their family and the time they spent with those closest to them. Bernice is survived by her son, Brian, and his wife, Kim, and her two granddaughters, Abigail and Olivia.
Her granddaughters were truly the center of her world. She loved Abby and Livvy immensely and took tremendous pride in being their grandmother. Time spent with them and watching them grow brought her some of her greatest happiness.
Bernice enjoyed the simple things that made life good. She loved to read, loved to eat, and especially loved spending time with her family. Family vacations were something she always looked forward to, creating many memories that will now be treasured even more. She and John also enjoyed their regular trips to Amish Country, a place they returned to together over the years.
And anyone who knew Bernice's baking knew about her chocolate cookies. They were simply the best...a family favorite that will forever be associated with her and with the countless family moments in which they were shared.
Bernice will be remembered for the life she built with John, her dedication to her family, the enormous love she had for her granddaughters, and the traditions and memories she leaves behind. She will be deeply missed by those who loved her.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, September 24, 2026, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., with a Funeral Mass to follow at St. Maximilian Kolbe Roman Catholic Church at 12:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Wrightstown, NJ.
