Carmella Mercuro, 89, passed away on June 20, 2026. Born on July 16, 1936, in Newark, Carmella was the daughter of the late Joseph and Rose Zita. She grew up in Newark and lived there until moving to Toms River 21 years ago.
Carmella was a seamstress for many years, known for her steady work ethic and the quiet pride she took in doing things well. In all she did, she carried herself with a gentle wisdom, offering care and consideration that made others feel seen and supported. Even in life’s ordinary moments, her warmth and sense of humor brought comfort and lightness to those around her.
Carmella was married to the love of her life, Fred, who predeceased her in 2005. She is survived by her three loving children; Rosemarie Giannone, Fred and his wife Pamela, Camille Duca, her five grandchildren, Mallory (Keaton), Freddy (Breaunna), Grace, Brittney and Nicolas, and her five great grandchildren, Charli, Hunter, Nora, Amelia and Hayden. Those who knew Carmella will remember the devotion she showed to her family and the simple joys she cherished—especially cooking, crocheting, and time spent together with the people she loved most. Her compassion and kind heart were evident in the way she welcomed others, listened without judgment, and gave of herself with sincerity.
Carmella also valued fellowship and community, and was involved with the Italian American Club, Woman's Auxiliary Club, and Sew Sew Club.
