Calogero (Charles) Monastero Pino, known more familiarly as “Chich” and “Uncle Charlie,” passed away peacefully at the age of 93 in his home in Toms River, New Jersey, on July 27, 2021. Born in 1927 in New York City, he was the fourth child of immigrant parents Angelo Pino and Grace Puma from Sicily, and brother to new-world kids Mary, Danny, Concetta, Salvatore, and Angelo. He lived an Italian-American story, playing in the streets of the Lower East Side, beating his brothers home for the spaghetti, shooting craps and serving in the Army, and raising a loving family with his bride and partner of 64 years, Mary DeFazio, who passed at 83 in 2017. He was generous and caring to all, and among his poker-playing colleagues over many years, that generosity was also regularly remunerated.
His children learned from and admired him, respected his fatherhood, and sought his counsel and advice. Chich and Mary were wonderful examples of parents who cherished family and each other.
He is survived by children Michael and Angela, brothers Salvatore and Angelo, and sister-in-law Anne DeFazio, and was predeceased by his daughter Marianne. He was revered by his grandchildren Alison, Alex, Dan, Mary, Julia, and Elizabeth, great-grandchildren Emma and Samantha, and Michael’s wife Louise Murray-Pino, Angela’s husband John Dailey, and Marianne’s husband Kevin English. He was a loving uncle to many nieces and nephews. Our cousin Josephine Tabick and uncle Salvatore were especially close and caring for him in his later years, and we love them dearly for it.
Arrangements were handled by Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home in Toms River. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.quinn-hoppingfh.com.
