Edith was born April 6, 1921 in Weehawken, NJ to Catherine Beissbarth Muller and Alfred Muller. Catherine died 14 days after Edith’s birth, and she was raised by her grandmother until she was 16 years old.
Edith graduated from Woodrow Wilson HS and then attended Schudder Secretarial School. She went to work at Chase National Bank in NYC and is where she met Bill Chapman while commuting into the city. That same year the attack on Pearl Harbor forced the US entry into WWII, and Bill enlisted in the Army. The following year Bill proposed to Edith, and she married the love of her life.
Her first child, Ronald, was born in July 1943, and 4 years later she had a second son, Craig. In 1945 Bill was released from active service and they moved to Teaneck, where they raised a family and lived for the next 39 years. In 1984 Edith and Bill moved to Toms River, where they reunited with the Teaneck neighbors. They celebrated their 50th anniversary in 1992, but sadly Bill died at age 74 five months later. They had a wonderful life together - Community Church activities, dancing lessons, Muzak Conventions, vacations in Florida, cruises, close knit neighbors, graduations, and weddings.
Edith lived in Toms River for another 25 years. These were years of transition in volunteering with Holly Twig and the Red Hat Society. She was President for Holly Twig and active in raising funds for Community Memorial Hospital. In addition to her two sons Ronald and Craig and their wives Bonnie and Jeannie, Edith was blessed with 5 grandchildren - Duane, Jennifer, Shawn, Christin, and Brooke - as well as 4 great grandchildren - Cameron, Chloe, Charlotte, and Greyson.
In 2018 Edith moved to Harrogate Retirement Community where she again made new friends. Her life was made easier in no longer managing a house, making her own meals, and having maintenance at her disposal when things stopped working. The isolation caused by Covid took a toll on us all, but she endured and enjoyed reaching her 100th birthday. Edith was blessed with good health for most of her life and was not afraid of dying as her health deteriorated in recent months and looked forward to reuniting with her dear husband Bill.
Family and friends are invited to attend a funeral service at the All Faith’s Memorial Tower in George Washington Memorial Park 234 Paramus Road Paramus, NJ 07653 on Saturday December 11, 2021 at 10:15 AM. Burial will be at George Washington Memorial Park.
