Ethel Rose Ayers, 83, was born on October 6, 1942, in Paterson, New Jersey, and passed away on July 30, 2026 at the Community Medical Center in Toms River, NJ. Born and raised in Paterson, she remained a resident of the city for most of her life before relocating to Toms River, New Jersey.
Ethel was a graduate of Passaic County Community College in 1983, a milestone that reflected her steady determination and the quiet wisdom she carried throughout her life. She went on to serve her community with care and attentiveness as an accounting tutor for Passaic County Community College. Later, she dedicated over 20 years as a Transportation Bus Aide for Briggs Transportation of Point Pleasant Beach, NJ, a role that suited her thoughtful nature and her kind-hearted way of looking after others.
An avid reader, Ethel found comfort and meaning in books, and she also loved to bake—sharing warmth in the most familiar ways. Those who knew her best will remember not only her sound judgment and gentle consideration, but also the humor she could offer at just the right moment, bringing lightness and ease to everyday life.
Ethel was preceded in death by her husband, Leo E. Ayers, Sr.; her daughter, Theresa Reid; and her son, Leo E. Ayers, Jr. She is survived by her son, Michael L. Ayers, Sr.; her daughters, Patricia Ayers and Harriet Chillemi (John); her sister, Anna Hemming; and her brother, Robert Hemming. Ethel is survived by 15 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, August 3, 2026 at the Laurel Grove Cemetery, 295 Totowa Road, in Totowa, NJ. Burial will immediately follow.
