Ferdinand “Fred” Vincent Nobile, was born September 30, 1914 to Vincenzo Nobile and Anna Olivo in Newark, NJ, and grew up in a loving family with three brothers, Frank, Phil, and Jack, and three sisters, Lucy Tortorello, Irene Ranucci, and his youngest sister Sophie Carfagno, of Toms River, NJ, who survives him. Upon graduating from East Side High School in Newark, Fred was offered a scholarship to MIT but turned it down to support his family during the depression. He worked at various jobs “Down Neck,” including as a shoemaker in his father’s store, before enlisting in the army during WWII where he served as a Top Sergeant in the Technical Corps. On October 30, 1943, Fred married his loving wife, Mildred Piccini, who survives him, during a furlough and shortly thereafter was deployed to England, sailing across the Atlantic on one of the largest and most secret armadas in history. After his discharge, he began a 30-year employment at Ford Motor Company, and settled down in Scotch Plains, NJ, where he and Millie raised their three children, Vincent, who resides in South Plainfield, NJ, with his wife Laura; Matthew, of Poughkeepsie, NY; and Caroline, of Edinboro, PA, all surviving. He loved life and enjoyed solving any sort of mechanical, electrical, plumbing or carpentry problem, taking on countless home improvement projects at the Henry Street house. He and Millie’s famous backyard barbecues and poolside gatherings are memories his family will always cherish.
Fred and Millie moved to Bricktown, NJ, in 1976 and finally to Toms River, NJ, in 1988, where he was loved by a new set of friends and neighbors. He was always there for his grandchildren--Michael, Anna Marie, Christine, Gina, Rachel, Drew, Danielle, and Kyle--and most recently for his great-grandchildren, Laci and Johnny. Fred was a loving husband for sixty-seven years, a truly perfect dad and a playful and devoted grandfather. He also enjoyed being “Uncle Fred” to many nieces and nephews. His strong faith, belief in Jesus Christ, and his ability make others happy are an inspiration to all who loved him.
