Born September 17, 1941, in Portsmouth, VA, he was the son of the late Harold and Eloise Word Skewis. After growing up in Virginia, his family later moved to Newark, Delaware, where he graduated in 1960. His love of learning led him to earn a Bachelor’s degree in English from Wagner College in Staten Island, a Master’s degree from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, and an MBA from Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck. His professional career included serving as a supervisor for Bell Labs and later working for Lucent Technologies until retirement.
An adventurous spirit carried him and his wife, Connie, to Costa Rica, where together they owned a canoe and kayak business. Their shared passion for travel took them to more than 150 countries, while countless hours were also spent canoeing rivers across the country and throughout the Toms River area.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his children, Lisa Goldberg and Stephen Arnold.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 41 years, Connie Grant; daughter Alice Robke (Dave); grandchildren Sarah (Sam), Jen (Jacob), and Scott; great-grandchildren Caleb and Henry; sister-in-law Debbie Downey (Charlie); brothers-in-law Walter Herman (Jane) and Billy Herman (Robin); along with numerous nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of George’s Life will be planned for a date in near future.
