

Harry W. Bataille passed away on Friday, January 8, 2016, at the age of 98. Mr. Bataille was a decorated WWII veteran who was awarded two purple hearts and the Bronze Star Medal while serving in the United States Navy. Mr. Bataille was credited with saving numerous lives when his ship, the USS Skill, was torpedoed by a German U-boat and sunk in the Gulf of Salerno, September 25, 1943.
Mr. Bataille grew up in Livingston, New Jersey. After the war he worked for the Driver-Harris Company in Harrison, New Jersey until retiring in 1981. Following his retirement, he lived in Toms River, New Jersey. Mr. Bataille had many hobbies, among them gardening, fishing, and cooking. He will be missed.
Mr. Bataille is predeceased by his wife of 42 years, Anne, and two brothers, Raymond and Edward.
Mr. Bataille is survived by his sister, Alma Ellis, of PalmCoast, Florida; and sisters-in-law, Lorna Bataille, of Toms River, New Jersey; and Ruth Bataille, of Seminole, Florida. He is remembered with love by his family: Dad to David J. and Marilyn Hellmuth, of Lanoka Harbor, New Jersey; Grandfather to David C. and Susan Hellmuth, of Summit, New Jersey; Julianne and Kyle Flanagan, of Charleston, South Carolina; Great-grandfather to Elodie Rose, of Summit, New Jersey; and “Uncle Harry” to William Macheska, of Clovis, California; and David Macheska, of Jersey City, New Jersey. Mr. Bataille also has a son from a previous marriage, Harry Bataille.
A devoted husband, brother, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, Mr. Bataille was always there for his family.
Visitation will be Monday January 18, 2016 from 9-10:30 AM at Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home 26 Mule Road, Toms River, NJ 08755. Burial with military honors will follow at Ocean County Memorial Park in Toms River, NJ. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.quinn-hoppingfh.com.
