James Donnelly, 83, passed away on September 2, 2026. Born on July 31, 1943, James was a beloved and cherished presence in the lives of those who knew him, remembered with deep respect for a life marked by devotion, steady hard work, and enduring love of family and community. A longtime resident of Brick Township, New Jersey, he grew up in Jersey City and moved to Bricktown approximately 53 years ago, where he built a life rooted in faith, service, and commitment to those he held dear.
A proud U.S. Air Force Veteran, James served his country with honor. He carried that same sense of duty into his working life, spending his career with Dialight as a Tool and Die Maker before retiring in 2003. His devoted nature also shone through in the way he supported his family, including the time he worked alongside his wife at her floral shop, Joanne's Florist in Brick—quietly demonstrating that love is often expressed through showing up, day after day, with care and reliability.
James was married to the love of his life, Joanne (nee Bilotta), for 32 years until her passing in 2003. Their bond remained a defining part of his story, one remembered with tenderness and respect. He is survived by his daughter, Janine Donnelly-Rodriguez and her husband Al; his granddaughter, Sarah Rodriguez; and his brother, Bill Donnelly, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Michael and his wife Nancy (nee Faherty), and Bill's wife Nancy (nee Crawford).
In his personal life, James found joy and purpose in the rhythm of movement and the fellowship of others. A long standing member and former president of the Ocean County Running Club, he enjoyed running marathons, including running the New York City Marathon multiple years—an interest that reflected both discipline and perseverance. He also enjoyed Italian food, especially his late wife's cooking, a simple pleasure that carried with it the warmth of memory and the comfort of home.
James will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother—steadfast in his commitments, generous in presence, and deeply cherished by those who had the privilege to share in his life.
Visitation will be held at Quinn Hopping Funeral Home, 26 Mule Road, Toms River, NJ 08755, on September 8, 2026, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, 685 Hooper Ave, Toms River, NJ 08753, on September 9, 2026, at 10:00 am. Committal will be held at St Joseph's Catholic Cemetery and Mausoleums, 62 Cedar Grove Rd, Toms River, NJ 08753, on September 9, 2026, at 11:15 am.
