

James Henry Shanley, or as he was affectionately known, “Big Jim”, passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by family, on June 13, 2026, at the age of 84. Born on October 1st, 1941, in Jersey City, James spent most of his life in New Jersey, residing in North Bergen, Secaucus, and Clifton. He retired to Florida for a few years before returning to New Jersey where he spent his final years living in Toms River.
Jim worked for the transportation industry for over 42 years. He began his career as a bus driver, driving for De Camp bus lines for many years before transitioning to a management position, ultimately concluding his career as a terminal manager for De Camp at the Port Authority in New York City.
One of his family's fondest memories was of the private bus tours he took them on, driving to New York City’s landmarks as a Christmas gift. Those trips were filled with laughter and will always be cherished.
Jim was a car enthusiast, he owned a 1980 Corvette. He spent many years entering it in car shows, proudly showing off the trophies and awards his car won.
Jim was predeceased by his father, James Henry Shanley, his mother, Jeanette Elizabeth (Miller) Shanley, and his wife of over 40 years, Edilberta, “Berta” Vargas Shanley.
He is survived by his three children: James Shanley, and his wife, Bridget; his daughter, Lori Shanley Rotunno, and her husband, Chris; and his son, Kevin Shanley and his wife, Cheryl. He is also survived by his eight grandchildren- Brianna Kassel and her husband Greg; Cody Shanley; Jake, and his wife Rachel; Anthony and Hannah Rotunno; Sarah, Grace and Emma Shanley- and two great- children, Parker Rotunno and Beecher Kassel.
The family will be holding a private ceremony and burial.
