John Joseph Sobon

John Joseph Sobon, 82, passed away on August 3, 2026 at home. Born on May 12, 1944, in Irvington, New Jersey, John was a longtime resident there before relocating to Toms River, New Jersey, 27 years ago.

John was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Vietnam War, and his life reflected steady dedication and quiet strength. Through years of faithful work, he earned the respect of those around him and ultimately retired as the Head Custodian of the Manchester Middle School in Manchester, NJ—serving his community with constancy, care, and a generous spirit.

John was passionate and talented in his love for woodworking, a craft that suited his patient hands and thoughtful nature. In the simple, lasting beauty of what he made, many found a reflection of the kindness and consideration he so freely gave.

John was predeceased by his mother, Georgiana Sobon, and his father, Walter Sobon. He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Lou Lyons; his daughters, Kimberly Partenfelder (Thomas) and Kelly Curcione (Patrick); his step-daughters, Elaine Orosz (Jamie) and Patricia McNerney; his step-son, Billy Lyons (Barbara); his grandson, Zachary Partenfelder; his granddaughter, Madison Partenfelder; his step-grandson, Justin; and his step-granddaughters, Jenna, Rachel, Jennifer, and Christine. John is also survived by two great-grandchildren and four step-grandchildren.
