Joseph (Joe) Borrelli (96):

Joe was born into the loving Italian family of Pasquale and Philomena Borrelli. He grew up in Hoboken, NJ and was the last surviving sibling of six and now rejoins his sisters Emily and Angie, and brothers Mickey, Al and Emil in heaven.

He was loved by all from the very beginning. In his high school yearbook he’s described as, “Manifesting traits of character and an indomitable spirit that should spell his success in the service.” Every page has notes from friends and classmates labeling him a “good fellow” and a “swell pal.” Decades later, he was still the epitome of a good man.

He proudly enlisted in the Navy during WWII and was honored to be a member of the respected Seabees. He was stationed in Hawaii and the Philippines throughout his service, before being honorably discharged. During his deployment, he sent photos and letters to his wife Dorothy, who remained his inspiration throughout his entire life. Theirs was a love story for the ages.

The two moved to Point Pleasant where they built a life together and raised two amazing children that they loved very much. Joe worked at the A&P in town as a Deli Manager for 35 years. He later settled in Holiday City of Toms River, where he and Dot enjoyed a very active retirement. They loved cruises, going to AC and taking bus trips across the country. Joe was also captain of his bocce team and enjoyed going to church and sitting outside with his neighbors. But, his absolute favorite thing to do was to spend time with his beloved wife.

Joe and Dottie were happily married for more than 50 years. In that time he proved his unwavering devotion, even as Dot suffered through the grips of Alzheimer’s. She passed away in 2005, but he carried her in his heart right up until the end.

After her passing, he turned to the family they had created together to help him through the loss. His spirit lives on in his son, Ken, his wife, Louise and their children, Nicole and Laura. His other grandchildren, Keith Walker, Gemma Amiott and her husband Steven, and Kara also help carry his legacy. When his great-grandchildren were born, he became the “Baby Whisperer” and connected with them immediately. They gave him new life and extra years, so many thanks to Sidney, Samantha, Jordyn, Reagan, Jake and Kassie. He is also survived by his son-in-law Bob Abradi, who helped care for him through the years.

Eventually, Joe moved to Inspired Living in Sun City, FL where he was a favorite among residents and staff alike. He remained very active there and always participated in their events. Also, despite being one of the oldest residents, he was named the “Walking Club Leader” and was often seen pushing others around in their wheelchairs. He never felt sorry for himself and always found a way to help others. We can all learn a lot from him.

He joined his daughter, Maureen, in heaven when he passed away on July 15th. We are also certain that Dottie was there to take his hand and help him cross over. It brings us great comfort to know their love will continue eternally.

Family and friends may gather Sunday July 26, 2020 from 2pm to 6 pm at the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home, 26 Mule Rd., Toms River, NJ. What a rich and full life he had! I wish I had the opportunity to meet him, especially since his granddaughter is as loving and kind as he was.
