Born in Perth Amboy to the late Samuel and Elena Velez, Joe graduated from Barringer High School in Newark, New Jersey. From the beginning, he carried himself with a steady sense of purpose—someone who believed in showing up, doing the work, and doing it the right way.
Joe served his community with distinction as a Bloomfield Detective, retiring after 20 years. His career reflected the values that guided him throughout his life: a tireless work ethic, a commitment to fairness, and an unwavering honesty that earned trust and respect.
Joe is survived by his loving son, Joseph Velez, and his cherished granddaughter, Jeimmy Velez. He is also survived by his sisters, Carmen Medina and Margie Stefanelli and her husband Bobby (best friend); and his nephews, Samuel Medina and Michael Gerardi. Joe was predeceased by his nephew, Mark Gerardi.
Joe was affectionately known as Tito by his family—a name that spoke to the closeness he nurtured and the devotion he gave so freely. He found genuine joy in spending time with family and friends, and he was a diehard NY Yankee fan whose loyalty never wavered.
Cremation will be private.
