Margaret V. Jalowski (nee Hanneken), 87, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, January 15th after a long illness. She was born on March 4, 1927 in Jersey City, New Jersey where she grew up. Margaret graduated from Our Lady of Sorrows elementary school in 1942 and was a graduate of Snyder High School in 1946. She was born to Nicholas B. Hanneken, a Lehigh Valley Railroad worker and Angelina Hanneken (Nee Mastromonica) a housewife. She was of German and Italian descent. She had one older brother who died shortly after birth. She was very close to her many first cousins since both her parents came from extensive families.
She married Edward R. Jalowski at the young age of 22, a World War 2 veteran from Bayonne, NJ and of Polish descent. That was known as a mixed marriage back then. Margaret and her husband raised four boys, initially in Bayonne, and then in Brick Township where they had owned a summer bungalow for years.
She initially worked as a Secretary in New York City but left to become a housewife and raise her four boys. As they grew older, she returned to work, as a clerk in a bakery. In 1967, they moved permanently to Brick Town, NJ. She then took a job as an Administrative Assistant in the principal’s office of Brick Town High School. She worked there until she retired.
In Bayonne, Marge and Ed were key couples in St. Joseph's Cana Club from 1951 and pioneered the ecumenical program at Mount Carmel that spread to other churches. She was also a Den Leader for the Cub Scouts.
In 1978, they moved to Holiday City at Berkeley in Toms River with a house on the water which was one of her loves. She loved to travel with her husband, and with their local troupe, they actually square danced across Europe, performing shows for the locals.
Marge and her husband were communicants of St. Joseph’s parish in Toms River, where they were Ecumenical Ministers. She loved spending time at the beach; not only at the Jersey shore, but also at their time share in Myrtle Beach, SC. She loved her family and having fun. She would always urge her children to love God, have fun and enjoy life. She also was very hospitable and had many friends.
She is predeceased by her son Bart who passed in 2012, and her husband Ed who passed away in January of 2015. She is survived by her sons Edward Jalowski and his wife Lena, Nicholas Jalowski and his wife Nancy, Paul Jalowski and his wife Kelly, his grandchildren Angelina, Ana, Daniel, Brianna, Andrew, Dylan, Gerard and Paul and her great grandchildren, Morgan, Ashley and Trent.
A viewing will be held at Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home in Toms River, NJ, on Friday, January 22nd from 4 to 8PM. A celebration mass will be held at St. Joseph’s in Toms River at 10AM on Saturday, January 23rd followed by internment.
