Mary Lou was born on March 5, 1942 in Bayonne, New Jersey to Andrew Ciok and Mary Vaivada Ciok. She attended St. Andrew’s Grammar School and Holy Family Academy. She met “Woodsie” (aka Frank), the love of her life, at the local bowling alley, and they married in 1963. They raised their family of 4 children - Cammie, Kristen, John and Jay (aka Frank) in Bayonne. Mary Lou was an active volunteer in numerous church, school and scouting programs. In 1979 she went to work as a secretary at Chase Manhattan Bank in NYC where she quickly climbed the corporate ladder in the Real Estate Division. She later moved on to Swiss Bank Corp / UBS as a Vice President in the Commercial Loan Division. After several years she happily retired so she could spend more time with Woodsie and dote on their beloved grandchildren.
Mary Lou loved her time spent at the Jersey Shore, especially with family, and after retirement enjoyed travels to the West Coast and Europe with family and friends. In her spare time, she was an avid reader and enjoyed puzzles of all kinds - crossword, jigsaw, and Wordle which she played faithfully every day with her lifelong friends.
Mary Lou had an extensive collection of Swarovski figurines and ornaments that she enjoyed sharing with her grandchildren. She will be fondly remembered for her impressive polka moves, her world famous onion dip, and her love of rainbows and a good glass of Riesling.
Survivors include her husband, Frank Steffich; her children Cammie Mechler, Kristen Farlese (Steve), John (Alison), and Jay; her grandchildren Lauren, Katie, Kevin, Mary, Jack, Leah, Sawyer, and Tanner; and brothers Andrew (Denise) and Edward Ciok, and their sons. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Amanda Mechler.
A memorial visitation will be held on Sunday November 8th from 12:00-2:00pm at Quinn Hopping Funeral Home 26 Mule Road Toms River, NJ 08755 with a memorial service beginning at 1:30 pm. In lieu of flowers we ask that donations be made to The Campus School at Boston College in memory of Amanda Mechler.
