Mr. DeMartis attended P.S. 16 and graduated from Newtown High School in Queens, NY. He was a US Army veteran of World War II serving from February 1943 until January 1946. He was wounded and was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He owned and operated his own trucking company for 20 years. In 1948 he married his wife of 62 years, Theresa Ferrera and moved to Valley Stream, NY. In 1967 he worked as a water plant manager for the town of Hempstead, NY retiring in 1980 after 13 years. He then moved to Sierra Vista, AZ. Upon his return to Valley Stream, he worked for Jack LaLanne until 1992 when he moved to Silver Ridge Park in Toms River, serving as trustee of that community. He enjoyed all sports, played golf and bowled and was an avid Giants fan.
Mr. DeMartis was predeceased by his first child in 1950, his sister Frances, his brother James and his daughter-in-law Teresa. He is survived by his wife, Theresa, his children; Peter and his wife Cathy, Michael and his wife Kathy, John, Richard and his wife Gina, and Mary Beth, his ten grandchildren; Jesse and his wife Emily, Tracey, Mickey, Matthew, Carly, Laura, Jaclyn, Danny, Joey and Thomas, his two great-granddaughters, Kayla and Peyton Rose. He is also survived by his two sisters, Marie Samuelson and Helen Mele and his two brothers, Felix and Joseph.
Visitation will be on Thursday, January 27th from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm at the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home, 26 Mule Road, Toms River, NJ. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10:30am at the St. Maximilian Kolbe RC Church in Toms River. Interment to follow in the New Jersey Veterans Cemetery in Arneytown, NJ.
