

Philip was born August 21, 1930 at West Hudson Hospital in Kearny NJ to Philip Sr. and Cecilia. He attended Holy Cross Elementary School in Harrison, NJ. His family moved and settled in Kearny NJ where he graduated from Kearny High School. He was drafted into the US Army and served as a Corporal in the infantry during the Korean War. He received numerous Commendation Medals and was awarded a Purple Heart for being wounded in action. Upon his discharge he returned to work at P. Ballentine and Sons in Newark, NJ. There he met the love of his life Dolores Iliara. He married his beloved on August 21, 1960 and she remained by his side for 63 years until his passing. He joined the Kearny Police Department in 1959 as a patrolman and worked his way through the ranks retiring in 1989 at the rank of Captain. While serving as an officer he also continued his education at night taking college classes at John J. College and Jersey City State College. Upon graduation he received his Master’s Degree in Criminology/Criminal Justice. After retirement he relocated to Holiday City South in Toms River where he became actively involved with the VFW Silver-Holiday Post #10185. He served on several executive posts and attained the status of Past Post Commander.
Phil was a devoted husband and family man. He enjoyed taking vacations with his family especially cruising. These family gatherings were to celebrate their anniversary milestones. He was an avid reader and history buff. In his spare time he enjoyed strolling around his neighborhood on his daily walks.
Philip was predeceased by his two grandsons Philip J. Reed IV and Robert J. Reed and his three sisters Cecilia Kilcullen, Mary Macchia and Eileen McGrath. He is survived by his loving wife Dolores Iliara Reed; three sons, Philip and Agnes Reed, Greg and Cheryl Reed and Glenn and Tracy Reed. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be held on Monday November 27, 2023 from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home 26 Mule Road Toms River, NJ 08755. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday November 28, 2023 at 10:00 am at St. Maximilian Kolbe RC Church 130 St. Maximilian Lane Toms River, NJ 08757. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery 340 Ridge Road North Arlington, NJ 07031. In lieu of flowers please make donations in Phil’s memory to the VFW Silver-Holiday Post #10185.
