Bill Higgins, a man whose life was a vibrant work of art; with strokes of boundless kindness, infectious creativity, and unwavering enthusiasm, passed away peacefully on December 29, 2025 at the age of 78. He leaves behind a legacy as colorful and inspiring as the art he taught and created, and a profound sadness in the hearts of the many who will miss him.
A deeply cherished husband, devoted father, and adored grandfather, Bill’s love for his family was the masterpiece of his life. He found immense joy in every moment spent with them, nurturing their spirits and celebrating their unique talents, always encouraging them to explore their own creative paths.
Bill grew up in Nutley, NJ, graduated from St. Mary’s in 1961, and from Nutley High School in 1965. He earned his Bachelor of Arts at Montclair State University and his Master of Arts at Kean University, with a concentration in original silk screening. Landscapes of the New Jersey Shore coastline and forests were his favorite.
For 35 years, Bill was a beloved fixture at Clara B. Worth Elementary School, where he served as an art teacher. His classroom was a sanctuary of imagination, a place where every child felt seen, heard, and empowered to express themselves. Renowned for his innovative spirit and gentle guidance, he was honored with the "Teacher of the Year" award multiple times, a testament to the profound impact he had on countless lives. He loved unlocking potential, encouraging every student to find their own creative voice and believe in their ability to make something beautiful. In recent years, he carried this spirit to his grandchildren, with whom he was frequently cheerfully doing art projects.
Beyond the classroom, Bill was an avid and talented artist himself, known for his striking screen prints that captured the beauty and complexity of the world around him. He was a true enthusiast of history, meticulously collecting World War II Jeeps. Each vehicle was a rolling piece of the past he loved to meticulously restore and share with others through parades, or just taking friends and family for joyrides around the neighborhood.
His home often resonated with the sounds of classic rock, as Bill, a lifelong music lover, delighted in introducing friends and family to his favorite bands, sharing the joy of powerful guitars or poignant lyrics. For decades, he channeled his rhythmic soul as a dedicated drummer, playing in various bands and bringing joy to countless audiences with his infectious energy.
His gentle spirit also extended to animals. Bill was never happier than when one of his beloved cats perched comfortably on his shoulders, a familiar sight that brought a smile to all who knew him. He adored dogs, finding companionship and unconditional love in their presence, and often found peaceful moments feeding the deer that graced his backyard, marveling at their quiet grace.
Whether through a brushstroke, a drumbeat, a shared song, a meticulously restored Jeep, or a quiet act of kindness, Bill Higgins radiated warmth and encouragement. He lived a life dedicated to inspiring others, leaving a beautiful imprint on the hearts of his family, friends, students, and even the creatures he cherished.
