Raised in the Bronx until he was a teenager, Bill moved to Hazlet, NJ in 1969 graduating from Raritan High School in 1971. After his marriage in 1975 to Dorann (Tyson), they moved to Brick to begin raising their family. In 1990, they returned to Hazlet where they raised their three daughters for the next 30 years, ultimately moving to Toms River 2.5 years ago. Throughout the many places he called home, he was steady in his devotion to family and in the quiet, thoughtful way he showed up for the people who mattered most.
Bill retired in 2016 after a dedicated career as a Purchasing/ Production Manager. He was known as a hard-working man who took pride in doing things the right way—guided by experience, good judgment that he accumulated over his long career.
Bill was married to the love of his life, Dorann, for over 50 years. He is also survived by his three daughters: Erin Marie O’Brien; Kelly Ann Byron and her husband Jordan; and Heather Lynn O’Brien. He was a proud grandfather to his two granddaughters, Paige Mercedes and Juliette Yvonne. He was predeceased by his brother, James Michael O’Brien, and by his parents, William Sr. and Gladys. Also surviving are a host of loving nieces, nephews, and cousins and his Uncle Bob Flores. Bill also had a great deal of very close friends that he affectionately called his Band of Brothers, several of whom have predeceased him.
In his personal life, Bill found joy in music, cars and sports. He carried a quirky quiet sense of humor and he gave his attention generously to the people he cared about, including as the #1 fan of his nephews’ football careers and support of his daughter, Heather, a National 3x Bronze medalist with the Special Olympics. Bill also endured countless band/choir concerts, school plays and dance recitals with a smile and a heartfelt adoration for the many accomplishments of all three of his daughters. After his retirement, Bill reconnected with high school friends, building up the RHS class of 1971 community and planned a huge reunion bringing together old friends.
A Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 28, 2026 from 1–4 pm at the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home, 26 Mule Rd., Toms River, NJ, with services to begin promptly at 3 pm. Interment will be private.
