Tony led a full life, born in Java, Indonesia on October 7, 1927 while his father was managing a rubber plantation, he was later sent home to England after the unexpected passing of his mother, where he and his siblings, Peter, Anne, Charles and Suzanne were raised by their Granny Sutton. Tony served in the British Army and later worked in Brazil as a coffee taster before immigrating to Canada. Although Calgary was his intended destination, a lack of funds kept him in Toronto where he met his beloved wife of 58 years, Thelma (deceased August 5, 2013), and began a 35+ year career with Trans Northern Pipeline Inc. Tony and Thelma were loving parents to Laura and Adrienne (Jim) and grandparents to Ian and Emily.
Tony was a happy, loving, affectionate, thoughtful, sensitive man, often recognized for being such a gentleman. An avid reader, he loved to discuss world events and also enjoyed watching hockey and baseball, and figure skating too. Tony was a proud Canadian and reveled in family trips in the camper exploring our beautiful country.
When his Alzheimer’s diagnosis came in 2009 he struggled but maintained his playful sense of humour. Thank you to the staff at Chartwell Lansing Retirement Residence for helping to support Tony’s care over the past nine years. We are grateful.
We take comfort in knowing that Tony and Thelma are now reunited, and their love affair continues. May they rest in peace.
A private family service will be held at a later date. While donations to the Alzheimer’s Society are welcome, in Tony’s memory, we encourage everyone to be kind, open to new adventures and generous with your love.
