By trade, I’m an interviewer so I just peppered him with questions. A couple stick out. 

He was a diehard Leafs fan. 
Here’s what he had to say when I asked the proverbial question for all Maple Leafs fans. 

That was just 90 minutes before he actually passed. I’m like lord take this poor man out of his misery. It must be the drugs talking because he’s out here delusional on his death bed saying the Leafs will win. Blessed assurance. Bless his heart. 

Luckily he passed with family around him. He could have gone in the middle of the night after we left. 

Uncle Colonel. Yes his name is colonel. Every Jamaican family has a colonel, captain, sergeant and a junior. These are just the rules. We don’t make them up we just follow them. Every Jamaican family of a naval base. 

When he did pass true to form my mom Cleo; Barbara depending on if you met her before or after she got money. McRoberts or Sheppard Avenue E, Barbara. The Danforth or Ossington, Cleo. she was project managing, calling family so they could say their last words, my aunt Pam was preaching partially but also being a nurse and comforting him. I didn’t know what to do so I just rubbed his head as I love to do and started talking in his ear and I recited the chorus of soon and very soon which was not on my Spotify wrapped but somehow came to my mind in that moment as it literally was going to be soon. 

I do public speaking to students and one thing I tell them is you never see a UHaul behind a hearse. When you pass, the awards and accolades and money, the manmade possessions won’t go with you. So, think about what will. 

Earlier that day when I asked him what he was the proudest of in his life. He couldn’t hear me, so I had to repeat myself, true to form but no surprise he didn’t mention a material good or even himself once. He was -correction he still IS our pride and joy. Last word goes to my Grandad on what he’s the most proud of.

So as my grandad would say “tell me something” pre-emptively before he asked you a question. To which I would answer “something.” If you want to help us as family? Tell us something! We know you’re sorry for our loss and we’re in your thoughts and prayers. We feel the same for you. Tell us a story about him. Tell us a memory you have of him. We miss him but we also missed out on aspects of his life we didn’t witness. The best way to keep him alive is to keep those stories alive for us to cherish. 

Simply put as a great philosopher once said: 

      “Memories don't live like people do

      They always 'member you

      Whether things are good or bad. 

      It's just the memories that you have” 

That philosopher was Anthony Moses Davis also known as the reggae artist Beenie man. 

I’ll give you a couple, giving you a vantage point to his final days.

The last thing he said to my grandma was give me a kiss. And she was playing hard to get. Even in a hospital bed with everything going on he had the core strength to rise up and give her a kiss. 

A real philosopher once said “The greatest thing a father can do for their kids is love their mother.” He adored my grandmother and is the definition of that sentiment. 

Of course we lost him on Valentine’s Day, because he has the biggest heart. Of course, we bury him on International Women’s Day as he always had strong women around him. 

One of them is my aunty Pam was gracious enough to clear out the room and give me some 1x1 time with him before he passed.

My grandfather never had a bad day. He never greeted me with any thing but a smile. When you asked how he was doing he would Routinely say “not any worse.” He was always an ascending asset. His baseline was always high. 

He lived the life of a king, look at all the people here. The hospital staff were struck by the amount of visitors he had. We took over waiting rooms. Took over the food court. He lived like a king because he acted like a servant. He lived a life of service. Partially because my grandmother is a slave master. But more so because it made him smile to see others smile. A smile he loved to tell you he spent $5000 on to improve with him false teeth. He was unselfish. Many of us are upset right now. Because we lost that studious servant. You want to serve him. Turn the frown upside down. Smile. And be a servant and make others smile. He was a simple man. That’s all he wanted. 

In fact going to funerals was one of his favourite activities. He and my grandmother would go to funerals for fun. They’d funeral hop and go to multiple funerals in a day. Go to funerals for people they barely knew. They see it as a celebration of life. So don’t mourn today, celebrate his life. 

The scary part for me was imagining life without him. But what I realized is he’ll always be with me. As he will you. His legacy is the mark he left on all of us. 

Not too long ago at my brother Anton’s wedding I mentioned, my youngest son has a lot of Anton in him and that’s true but he has Clifton in him too. They both are walking emojis.

 He’s not gone. He lives on in us.

I just want to thank Curtis for doing this. As you’re grieving also and I’m sure you would rather be in the audience with your family but whenever our family needs you, birthday, wedding, christening, going of to university. funeral you stand tall for us. You’re our chosen family. Not sure we ever gave you a choice. You can’t opt out but we’re so grateful for you as my grandfather was as well. 

A couple housekeeping notes 

My grandfather’s wish. And for those among us for whom this is your first Black funeral welcome. Get comfortable. We treat funeral processions as an endurance sport and you guessed it, us Jamaicans, the best in the world. We’re all Usain Bolt when it comes to grieving. In regard to that his wish was black people, act your age and not your shoe size, ok? Except you Rowan and Desmond. If you’ve been to a Black funeral before at least one person says “oh no lord! Jesus take me instead.” It’s usually one of the Pentecostal ones. My granddad said we’ll have none of that here today. You’re too late. He beat you to the race and besides, he prepaid for all this not on his credit card but in cash so you’re going to have to get your own. It’s him and him alone, yuh hear? And really by anyone let’s be honest he was talking about Joyce and Lilly. In case some people from foreign were wondering. Some people Dem facety yuh see. Alright, where were we?

I’ve been dreading this day for as long as I could remember what it meant to lose someone. 
I’m good at compartmentalizing things but how can you put anything in focus when you lose your literal heart. That’s what my grandfather was. He was the heartbeat of our family. My grandmother is the soul. She’s the operating system we all exist off of but he was the main organ. So the fact his organs failed him was cruel punishment.

Thank you Daddy for being our guiding light ... and always bringing the sunshine and laughter to our lives. Miss you & Luv yah lots!!

Tribute to My Father – Clifton Frank Bryan (2 of 2)

We would go on to attend more sporting events, and especially watching hockey games together during our birthday week. Hugging and cheering at Leaf hockey games just like we did at the boxing fight. I would encourage any father to spend time one on one with their children, be yourself, you might give your kid the best moment of their life. 

When I was young, we would watched hockey in my bedroom on a small TV. One night, while watching the hockey game, my dad asked me if I did my homework. I said no, and he said, why not, and I said I couldn't be bothered. He looked at me and said, do you know why I came to Canada? He said, I came to Canada to give you kids a better life than I could ever have. Being young at the time, I brushed it off. 

But as I got older, the words meant more to me. Whenever I struggled in college or at work, I remember those words and thought about how much my parents have sacrificed and worked hard to put us in the position we were in. Back then, you had no mental days off. So, I may have tears in my eyes, but I can celebrate my father's life because he did everything, possible to give his children a better life than he could ever have.

Tribute to My Father – Clifton Frank Bryan (1 of 2)

I would like to share a story about one of the best memories in my life. On June 20th, 1980, I was 16, not an easy age to be. My father was 48. My dad surprised me with tickets to Sugar Ray Leonard vs. Roberto Duran fight on closed circuit TV at Maple Leaf Gardens. It was the fight of the decade, I was so excited he knew I loved boxing, and so did he. He named me after the boxer Floyd Patterson. It also was a rare occasion that I got to monopolize my father’s time. There was great hype built up around the fight, and the place was sold out. In the crowded lobby, we ran into George Chuvalo, and my father, who was comfortable talking to anyone, introduced us to George Chuvalo who was also with his son.

Our seats were up in the grey section, in the nosebleeds, and we were completely surrounded by guys from Panama, or Latino guys. It was an energetic crowd. Some guy was screaming that Roberto Duran, with fists of stones, was going to destroy Sugar Ray Leonard. The Latino guys that were seated around us, all had flasks or mickeys of booze they snuck in, and one guy offered my dad a drink. I was thinking he's not going to drink it, but he did, and everybody let out a big cheer. The night of partying was on. Sugar Ray Leonard started out slow. At the end of each round, the Latino guys jumped up and were screaming. Later in the fight, Sugar Ray started winning rounds, and my father grabbed my arm, and we jumped up, and my dad yelled, that's our round. It was us against the world, just me and my dad. At that moment, we were more than father and son, we were best friends. Holding and hugging each other after each round, and putting our arms in the air. Sugar Ray lost a close fight that night, but we had the time of our life.

We still can't believe you're gone. We're so thankful for the time that we got to spend with you over the years and yet it doesn't seem like enough. We're so grateful for your love, your wisdom, your stories and the way you loved our family. You were the best father, father-in-law, grandfather and great grandfather. 
We love you and you'll always be in our hearts.

My boy lollipop, you may my heart go giddy up. 

I love you, I love you so much. I thought I’d never let you go. 

Thank God for the good times and the bad times we had together.  
We never let the sun go down on our wrath. 

We believed and trusted everything to God in prayer. Knowing that He promised to take care of us. 

You were a prayer warrior - right up until the end. A few hours before you passed, you prayed your last prayer for the world. 

Clifton, you loved us all and loved to have the little ones around you. 

You loved the Lord and always enjoyed and took the time to tell others about God. 

May your soul rest in peace with the Lord until we meet again.

And You sees what is going on even in the world. That we are attacked by the evil one?

Well, Lord, we know that he is able. He is able. Lord, when we come to the God, we come to the God of assurance. Your words say that we should come and we should come boldly.

Because we know that he is out there Lord, trying to attack us because he want to fight against you.

We pray for all the churches in the world. Lord, we ask that you would just continue to lead us.

May you continue to direct us. So Lord, we put ourselves before you.

We know that you are greater than he that is in your world. So Lord, we ask for a special blessing upon each other today and the days ahead.

Pray for all those who are sick.

Lord, just help us to lean on Jesus Christ the author and the finisher of our faith. Continue to bless us, continue to bless our congregation at Ossington. 

So Lord, all these things I put before you Lord, knowing that you can do all things. to say that we should come and should come boldly. 

So I praise you. I adore you. Teach us your ways. May we live by your word.

So just bless us again. I pray in Jesus name Amen. Amen.

Mrs Bryan was a dear friend to the Simpson family, a hard worker, a union steward, a constant companion to his wife, an ernest family man.He and his wife's friendship was a lasting and enduring one. Even though my parents moved to Florida.Iam sure he will be severely missed at Ossington Baptist Church.I am so glad that God saw fit to take him home before he had to suffer the worst end of cancer.I pray that would keep his family surrounded with the peace of God which passes all understanding and that you spend time,  sharing all the good times you had with him when he was alive.Almost two years ago he and his wife had us over for dinner after Anthony's funeral.We had such a precious  time with them. I'm sorry that we could not be there to share in his funeral celebration.

On behalf of the Chevannes Hyman Family, WE send YOU the FAMILY our deepest sympathies on Mr. Bryan’s Passing. It is so heartbreaking when family members die despite their years. BUT we just try to strengthen ourselves by holding onto the pleasant memories they SHARED with us. 
   We THANK Mr. Bryan for the love and kindness He  extended to us especially during the illness of our own mother (Doris).  When HE heard that Mama was hospitalized, HE didn’t waste any time to visit.  About an hour later, he showed up with my aunt and his wife. He joined them in singing and praying which was like a balm to our hearts.  HE was among the very Last Ones to SEE HER alive, only a few minutes before she passed. We will always remember that by the time HE drove out from the hospital parking lot, she died. 
  Family, stay strong and let’s be comforted knowing that HE is in God’s Hands. Rest in Peace, Mr. Bryan.

In loving memory of my brother Clifton  Bryan affectionately called Cliff and Bun-man. I am reminded of how kind-hearted he was. There was nothing Cliff had that he was not willing to share. 
During the time he was baking, although he was in Canada and I was in Jamaica 🇯🇲 he would find a way to let me have my bun every Easter.  Those of us who can remember will recall that his bun was the best tasting.
Whenever he was in Jamaica and I invited him out to dinner he always offered to pay the bill.  Personally he was more than a brother to me.  In my younger days he was my mentor.  I knew I could rely on him for the best advice.  
He was a devoted husband, brother, father, grandfather, great grandfather, great-great grandfather. He'll be sadly missed. 
Above all, he was a man of integrity.  It is said that if you have integrity nothing else matters.  Cliff you had integrity.... nothing else matters. 
May your soul rest in peace 🙏.

My deepest condolences to the Bryan family.

It has always been hard to say farewell to one of God's good gifts.  Deacon Clifton Bryan is God's model of a real man, father,husband and a real Christian to me. In my childhood, God furnished me with many real deals. I can mention a few, my Reginald Forbes( my grandfather), Anthony Simpson (my brother),Mrs. Boughton,  Mrs James, Mrs Grace Hines. God knew my character well enough that I needed to see the real deals, especially in the Christian Faith.

It just dawned on me, no more corn beef sandwiches from Mr. Mac and no more bun from Mr. Bryan.  Did he leave the bun recipe with you? Everyone  can attest that  even his bun was the real deal!

He was such a loving person and I will never forget our time together at Ossington Avenue Baptist Church. 
He is one of the Deacons who love the youth and young adults so much. 
I remember when I came from Jamaica in 2015, how he welcomed me apart of Ossington Avenue Baptist family. 
He would call and pray for me as well as encourage me to keep the faith amidst what's going on. 
I enjoyed his vibrant spirit. His passion and dedication to the things of God was a blessing.
He lived a life so pleasing to the Lord. One who do unto others he would like others do unto him

Brother Clifton , like all her brothers and sisters in Christ, was someone my mother held dear to her heart. Everyone will miss, and will grieve his homegoing because his giving and cheerful spirit are no longer visible, however they will all try to follow in his Christian footsteps; so that at the end of their journey there will be a grand reunion. Let us all rejoice and celebrate his wonderful journey through life, he fought the good fight and is now peacefully resting .

Very sad to hear of the passing of Mr. Bryan, he really was a lovely person! Lots of good memories of him and the entire Bryan family in our years together at Ossington Baptist.  May he rest in peace.

My condolences, thoughts and prayers to the entire Bryan family. I have the privilege of being a friend of the family for many years and had to opportunity to meet and spend time with Mr. Bryan and family. My Bryan, a true leader of his family and faith. He led his family with love, strength compassion and jokes. I remember he always loved to laugh and smile. What an incredible life he has lived, what a gift he was to so many. So sad he has left this earth, grateful for the memories. I hope the family find peace in the many memories they share together.

Hello, It’s Sharon Lamb Christie.
It’s with sincere sympathy that I  express my condolences. Uncle Cliff (adopted),as we referred to him because our parents regarded him as such, was very special to me growing up in both England and Canada. When we visited regularly, his was the first house on McRoberts Ave. and we Lambs were the third from the end on the same street. There was a great bond between both families. When we entered his home many times, it was filled with love and smells of the buns baking!
Uncle Cliff over the years was a source  of encouragement and inspiration of how he loved Ruth (my sister ), Nathan (my brother) and myself like his own. He and Auntie Lucille were almost like a brother and sister to Dad & Mom as well.
I’ll never forget such a beautiful man of God and how he and Aunt Lucille served others consistently and wholeheartedly. 
I thank Uncle Cliff for everything he’s enriched my life with and how he pronounced my name as only he could.  
He’s finished his course to begin a new and eternal one with God who is ever faithful. To God be the glory!

My condolences to the Bryan’s family. I am sorry to hear of your lost, of this wonderful man of God, I thank God for the opportunity to have met him as a young man at Ossington Ave. Baptist Church. I admired this gentleman so much. The loving, kind ways  he treats his family  and others. He makes you feel that everyone was important no matter who you are. He hang  with the young people, at our parties while waiting for his daughters to take them home and we felt so comfortable  in his presence, as if he was one of us. The delicious  buns  is unforgettable, I would picked up  a box of Easter buns.  for my self, , relatives and coworkers. Mr Bryan you  touched my life in a very positive way and I am forever grateful. May your soul Rest In Peace until we see each other again.

Cliff was always loving and friendly , he was jovial and often make us laugh. We know him to be a caring and loving family man. In return he was always loved by his family and friends. Mr. Bryan was always a fun-loving man. I got know Mr. Bryan over the course of my time at Ossington Ave Baptist church. My fondest memory of him was waiting for him to shout “Leah!” after service was over. And he’d meet me with a big smile—one that would make his eyes disappear. 

I remember when he would drive to church in their blue car, with his head barely peaking over the dashboard—it was the funniest thing ever! But the fact that he drove almost every Sunday showed his dedication to church/family. He was a short man with a huge heart.
