I first met Dorothy when she offered cookies at the door of my dorm room.  Since then, our friendship has spanned over 5 decades and 3 continents.
There were happy and carefree times in university.  We spent many late nights in each other's rooms gobbling up goodies, exchanging stories, jokes, and having a roaring time.
In England, she found Sheung Lai, the love of her life, and I shared in their excitement as they embarked on making their future together.  In those days they often invited me into their home, and fed me many a home-cooked meal.  I was their first friend to hold Chris when he was born; his arrival made their happiness complete.  
In Toronto, where they eventually settled, Dorothy managed her increasingly successful business ventures and growing family (addition of Clement) with enthusiasm  and energy.  No doubt it took steely determination, and superb organizational skills, but she did things and faced life with such poise and dignity that it seemed easy and natural to her.  
In all the time I've known her,  I've never seen her lose her temper, raise her voice, or say unkind things.  She is gentle, but strong, and a loyal friend.
These and many other fond memories of her will be with me always!

Dear Chan Bak,

We are so saddened, and shocked, to hear of  Dorothy's sudden passing. Words are difficult at time of this enormous loss. Her always cheerful demeanour caused us to forget the difficult battles she has been fighting for the last 20 years. We cannot remember any complaints from her despite her many difficulties. Her generous, caring nature was legendary, often gifting us with thoughtful presents in our many monthly dinners for the last decade. We have fond memories those happy, noisy meals; she was always your designated driver!  When we moved into our condo from a house, she knew of the challenges from her own experience, and thoughtfully bought us a foldable, wheeled shopping cart; so characteristic of her generous kindness. She will now live through Christopher and Clement, and their children.

You had an amazing wife …. a partner who was also a best friend, and a champion of your successes, and a reminder to always be your best self ….. then you were, and are, one of the lucky ones.

In this time of loss, refresh fond memories of the loving relationship of five decades, and take solace you were supportive, and always by her side, in her final days.

Raymond and I are sorry for your loss.  Dorothy will be sadly missed.


Dorothy and I spent a lot of time together in our youth.  We became very close since Lower 6 at St. Stephen's.  We took the same courses in HKU, lived in the same hostel.  And then we went to England to further our studies.  We also took the same courses, lived in the same dormitory.  We did a lot of travelling together.  I was there when she first met you, and, she was there when I met Raymond during our trip to Denmark.  Needless to say, she is a great friend.  All my favourite youthful memories are shared with her.  Raymond always remembers she happily paid for our meal at 利口福because she was the last one to leave the table when Raymond, you and I left the table suddenly.

Dorothy was friendly and graceful.  She was perfect in every role she played.

We have wonderful memories of Dorothy and feel privileged to have had the opportunity to get to know her over the years.   She had an inspirational and caring personality and always took the time to see how everyone was doing during our annual family gatherings.

We especially remember Dorothy giving us some words of wisdom when we needed it and thankful that she was always present when my own family celebrated our most important milestone events.

We will miss her cheerful smile and gift of a spirited conversation.

I still remember that we lived very close to each other in the early 1970’s in Hong Kong and we went to your home to play mahjong occasionally in the evenings. Your servant usually cooked red bean soup for dessert. Looking back, it just seems liked yesterday.

Ah Lai,
I share your sadness over the loss of Dorothy as I went through a similar experience myself three years ago.  Thank you for sharing your family photo album - I know you will always treasure the memories.
I've only learnt a few years back that Dorothy's family was a major benefactor of St Paul's College, and we LKYs have all benefitted from the facilities at Wong Ming Him Hall. So I've always considered Dorothy to be an integral  member of the St Paul's College fraternity.
Ah Lai, we all owe you a debt for looking after the Wong's favourite daughter so well over the years. In the midst of your grief, I hope you'll draw strength and positive energy from the remembrance of this remarkable lady in your life, and take good care of yourself and your family.


My deepest sympathies to Ah Lai and his family.  Dorothy was a remarkable woman who always greeted you with a smiling face and was kind and genuine to everyone. We will miss her dearly.

Dorothy was a wonderful and strong family focused person.  She was a supportive wife, loving mother and exceptional grandmother!   I am proud to have her as part of our extended family.

I have many fond memories of our family dinners and gatherings.  I especially remember that she had a really good 'wine chicken wing' recipe that we all enjoyed.
