Margaret Leslie Whynot died peacefully at her home in the Bayview Gardens Residence on Dec 15,2022 at the age of 98. Loved and loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and matriarch, Leslie is survived by her children: Geoffrey, John, Chris, and Liz; their partners: Tamara, Colleen and Linde; her grandchildren: Graeme, Jeremy, Alison, Laura, and Zoltan; her great grandchildren: Felix, Omega, Ethan, and Marlowe; her English nephews: Guy, Hugh, Mike, and Phil; and many friends. Born in England on October 17, 1924, Leslie grew up in Sunninghill, Berkshire in the years before WW II, worked briefly as a nurse before enlisting in the Women's Royal Naval Service (WRNS) in 1943 where she worked as a "Torpedo Wren", attached to HMS Defiance in Plymouth.
It was while in Plymouth that she met "her Lieutenant", Keith Whynot, love of her life. She married him in 1944 and set off for a life with him in Canada, as close and caring companions and parents until his death in 2009. Leslie had a lifelong love of music and performance, appearing for over 40 years in musical and theatrical productions at first in Calgary where they lived for many years and then in North York with the Yorkminstrels and Stage Centre.
Leslie was also a skilled and convivial tennis player at the Bayview Club, winning several competitions and even more friends over the decades. In her later years she was a welcoming host who loved visiting with and being visited by her family and friends. We will all miss her immensely.
The family would like to thank Angie Muller, Leslie's carer and friend, for her extraordinary kindness and support. And we also appreciate the care provided by Amica staff. Donations in Leslie's honour can be made to The Stephen Lewis Foundation Grandmothers project or to a charity of your choice.
