Biography

Paola Evangelista, affectionately known as “Mamma Brava” passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on June 7, 2019 just days away from her 99th birthday. Paola overcame lots of adversity during her lifetime. She survived the Second World War, impoverished living conditions, the destruction of her childhood home and was pre-deceased by her parents and four siblings.

Paola immigrated to Canada in 1960 in a quest to create a better life for herself, her husband and her young children. She proudly worked for Bick’s for more than 25 years – which became her second family. Paola worked tirelessly to provide for her family and was renowned for her perseverance, wit, sense of humour and, above all, her generosity.

In 2013, Paola lost her husband of 67 years, Domenico, which was the catalyst to her declining health. Despite her ailments, Paola had a zest for life, unfailing love for her family and unimaginable fortitude.

Paola will be missed beyond measure by her children Pasquale (Nora) and Adriana (Enzo), her grandchildren Daniela (Eugenio), Linda (Carlos), Paola (John), Elena, Aurora (Elmar), Domenico (Amber) and her great grandchildren Sara, Stefanie, Michael, Alyssa, Amelia, Michael, Jayce, Avery and Adam.

Paola will be remembered for her strength, resolve and smile, her tenacious spirit and love of gardening and bread making. She always sent visitors off with a blessing and a wish for our Mother Mary to watch over you. Paola - Adesso la Madonna ti accompagna.

We are so grateful for the exceptional care and compassion she received from Dr. Albert Kirshen. His kind hearted nature, sense of humour and incredible bedside manner will never be forgotten. Special thanks to Dr. Jennifer Shapiro for her patience and assistance when Dr. Kirshen was not available.

The family requests that any donations be directed to the Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care through Sinai Health Foundation in honour of these extraordinary individuals.
