Raymond Charles Murphy was born in Toronto on April 19,1945, and died on May 17, 2026 at the age of 81. A lifelong Torontonian, Raymond moved through the world with a steady, quiet grace meeting others with open hands and an open heart, leaving behind the kind of warmth that lingers in the lives that he has touched.
Raymond earned his teaching degree at the University if Toronto and devoted his working life to the classroom, teaching at Grenoble Public School, St.Andrews Middle School, Elkhorn Public School and Lillian Public School. He carried his vocation with gentle purpose, and even long after retirement he was often recognized by former students -people who remembered not only what he taught, but how he made them feel, seen, supported, and capable.
An athlete in spirits much as in practice, Raymond found joy and renewal in movement. He was a passionate Mayfair Member where he played squash and also attended many different classes, and was very fond of all his fitness instructors and trainers. His generosity also found its way onto the road, riding in many cycling events for charity, including support for children’s cancer causes, the Heart and Stroke and Brain health.
Ray was very passionate about Veterans at Sunnybrook Hospital’s K-Wing. Every November he actively collected donations with the help of specially crafted poppies for the Veterans Day and organized a breakfast to honour the Veterans, all provided by the Mayfair Club.
He was also a member of the Richmond Hills Men’s Golf League and was one of the club’s biggest advocates and a huge part of their league’s success. He was an integral member of the Men’s League Committee and proudly served as the Captain of the 3-buck squad for more than a decade. Ray was always quick with a smile and encouraging words.
Raymond will be deeply missed by his wife of 45 years, Glerry van der Kuyp, his son Michael, his niece Thessa (Sylvain), and his many nieces, nephews, cousins and grandchildren Joseph and Sebastian. He will be remembered warmly by his brothers Barry (Mary), Randy (Shelley),and by his brothers-in-law, Roy (Margriet), Frank (Joyce), and his sister-in-law Liz, along with a large extended family and many friends.
Ray was kind-hearted, compassionate and a patient listener and deeply loved and was always willing to help others. Ray always had a positive outlook on life and lived a happy fulfilling life.
Cremation will be private and an announcement of a Celebration of Ray’s life will be forthcoming.
In lieu of flowers we would appreciate a donation to Sick Kids Hospital.
