It is with great sorrow that the Grunberg, Moeglich, Balter and Negrea families announce the passing of our kind, caring and loving father, grandfather and great-uncle Silviu Valentin Grunberg, affectionately known as Vali. He was born in 1946 in Bucharest, Romania to Sofia and Arnold Grimberg. In the late 1960s, he graduated from the Polytechnic University in Bucharest with a degree in Engineering. At about the same time, he met Mela, the love of his life, and soon after getting married they welcomed their only child, Irina. In 1979, they made the momentous decision to leave Romania, and immigrated to Israel. After 2 years the family immigrated again, this time settling in Toronto, Canada, where Vali started working as an engineer for Motorola. Eventually, he obtained a job at Ontario Power Generation, designing safety systems for nuclear power plants. While there, he became one of the top experts on nuclear power safety design in Canada. He retired from Ontario Power Generation in 2010, after a long and successful career. In his retirement, Vali enjoyed hiking and spending time with his family and friends. He loved classical music and read voraciously on a wide variety of topics, from philosophy to politics, to spirituality. His beloved wife’s passing in 2018, after 51 years of marriage, affected him immeasurably and he continued to miss her greatly until the very end.
Vali was a brilliantly intelligent, spiritual man. A kind and gentle soul, he had an incredible ability to express his feeling through art. In fact, his many drawings and paintings have been displayed in several art galleries. He was a philosopher of life and, as such, a great teacher and learner. His devotion to meditation and yoga practices made him a true spiritual being. As a professional, Vali was an inspiration to his colleagues and a great contributor to science. He has left a very special legacy on all levels, personal, professional and spiritual. He will be greatly missed, and yet, his reunion with his wife Mela comes as a solace to us all.
Vali leaves behind an adoring grandchild, Sofia Moeglich; one child, Irina Grunberg; a child-in-law, Juergen Moeglich, his children Alexander and Christoph, and Christoph’s spouse Ioana and child Thomas; a sister-in-law Dorina Balter and her partner Kalman Brettler, Dorina’s children Daniel and Alice Balter, their spouses Claire Godfrey and Michael Nisky, and grandchildren Lola Sara and Evie-Simone, Stella Rachel and Isla Beatrix; deceased sister-in-law Mariana Negrea’s daughter Julia Negrea, Julia’s spouse Tom Dobson and their son Avi; and many close friends.
Should you feel so inclined, you are welcome to donate to Sunnybrook Hospital, whose incredible staff went above and beyond to take care of Vali, and to ensure that his final days were as comfortable as possible.
A visitation time will take place on Sunday March 19th from 1 o'clock until Service time at 2 o'clock at the Kane-Jerrett Funeral Home, 6191 Yonge Street, North York.
