Who is Mr. Tomas Sumayo Villar?
Tomas Villar is a cherished Lolo to his grandchildren and now to his great grand child. He will be remembered by them as a patient grandfather who did not rush things. They will remember the days their Lolo would pick them up from school and along the way pick up Kentucky fried chickens because it was Tuesday or Cinnabons for the other days. They will remember those Sunday Lolo Tomas would bring them to church to attend and serve the mass, either by car or by the subway. They will remember how their Lolo loved to hear them play the piano to the tune of Fandango or Rock around the Clock.
Tomas Villar is a devoted Father. He will be remembered as a father who did not say much, but showed his devotion and love to his children by actions and examples. He played basketball with them and showed them the Jump play. When they were just little kids, he brought home a little transistor radio with a microphone and let the siblings sang songs the whole day with him playing the guitar.
Once I attended a mass at the Lady of Lourdes, I saw this beautiful and inspiring scene. Three generations of Tomas Villars serving at the altar, the father, the son and the grandson.
Tomas Villar is a loving Husband. When I was a kid way back in Iriga, I had a glimpse of how loving Uncle Tomas to my Auntie Naty was. He would drive their truck with Auntie Naty to nearby town fiestas to bring their retail goods to sale. In parties, as soon as the Rock and Roll or Cha-Cha started to play, he will never dance alone but always asked the hand of Auntie Naty and together they danced to the music.
They both share the same birthday. In every birthday celebration of theirs, Uncle Tomas would grab his guitar and played and sang together with Auntie Naty their love song “Pansit”, noodles in English.
For me, Uncle Tomas is a friend, an inspiration, a father figure and a proud Irigueno. As a friend he made me laughed and supported me thick and thin. As an inspiration and father figure, he showed me how to be a husband, a father and a family man. Tomas Villar is an Irigueno. A proud and loyal Irigueno. He is one of the foundations of the Iriguenos Sa di Canada. I remember during the birth of the organization, I asked him that we need a place to unite the Iriguenos in Toronto for the forth coming Bagbinaydan 2005 Toronto. Promptly, he gave us the Lady of Lourdes Hall and helped us gathered most if not all the Iriguenos in Toronto. The rest of it was history. Before the pandemic, every summer for the fiesta of St. Anthony of Padua, the Patron Saint of Iriga City, he would be the first in the park, two o clock in morning, to secure a place for the Iriguenos to celebrate the fiesta.
Uncle Tomas, you may had passed in this life, but your memories will not be forgotten.
