
Funeral services for Curtis Edgar Birtcher Jr. of Tyler are scheduled for 2:00pm Tuesday April 25, 2017 at Lloyd James Funeral Home with Rev. Sherman Mayfield officiating. Burial will follow in Bethesda Cemetery in Lindale. A visitation will be at 1:00 pm Tuesday prior to the service.
Mr. Birtcher passed away on Friday April 21, 2017 in Tyler. He was born on February 12, 1933 in Texarkana to the late Curtis E. Birtcher Sr. and Irma Dell Birtcher. He grew up in Tyler and graduated from Tyler High School in 1950. He married Martha Jo Lyon on September 17, 1954, attended the University of Texas, served in the Army from 1955-58 and worked for GE/Trane for 38 years. He was a member of Lake Tyler Baptist Church where he was a men’s Sunday school teacher, RA mission leader and an ordained deacon and minister. He volunteered at the prison ministry for 18 years, was a certified volunteer chaplain by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and was honored as volunteer of the year in 2014 at Bradshaw Prison Unit. He also volunteered at the Tyler Police Department and was honored there as TPD volunteer of the year in 2003.
He is survived by his wife Martha Jo Birtcher; daughter Tammy Birtcher Taylor and husband Billy; son Curtis Joe Birtcher and wife Sharon; grandchildren Jason Taylor, Angela Darnell, Blake Birtcher, Melissa Taylor and Lauren Birtcher.
