Ed was born October 26, 1927 in Weston, West Virginia, the only child of Edward William and Mary Elizabeth Engstrom Stitt. He graduated in 1945 from Stonewall Jackson High School in Charleston, West Virginia and from the University of West Virginia with a B.S. in Business Administration. He was a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity.
He married Carolyn Ann Thacker on October 18, 1952 and they spent their first years of marriage at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia. They moved to Akron, Ohio where he was employed by Goodyear Tire Company. He was transferred to Tyler in 1962 with the new Kelly Springfield Tire Company as the Purchasing Agent and Traffic Manager.
He was passionate about golf, and he was fondly known as "Steady Eddie" serving as President of the Men's Golf Association at Willow Brook and Hollytree Country Clubs. He was a limited partner at Hollytree where he served on the Board of Directors.
He has consistently provided leadership to his family through his steadfast love. Ed was a devoted, loving and protective husband to his wife Carolyn throughout their 64 years of marriage. He was a committed and loving father to his daughter Mary Lynn and to her husband Mark Spencer and his son Marty Stitt and his wife Cil. He was a proud and nurturing grandfather to his beloved grandchildren Peyton and McCall Gilpin, Connor and Chandler Stitt and Claire Stitt Berger and husband Josh Berger, and great grandchildren Calvin, Piper and Edmund Berger, as well as his niece Leslie Huffman.
Some of his fondest memories were traveling with his golfing buddies, making 2 holes in 1 and playing gin and bridge.
A heartfelt thank you to caretakers, Angelica Martin, Josephine Lee, and Angie Montgomery whose devotion and skills helped to enable Ed to live comfortably in his home for the last years of his life. Also, special thanks to Dave Leming who faithfully visited Daddy during his last days.
Ed was good natured with a keen sense of humor and he always had a big smile on his face with a twinkle in his blue eyes.
