He was born on March 20, 1923 in Comanche, Texas to Joe and Isla Hicks. He was the second of their five children and graduated from Comanche High School in 1941 at which point he immediately volunteered for the U.S. Army where he served from May, 1941 through October, 1945. Most of his service was in England during WWII. After leaving the Army, he studied education at what is now the University of North Texas. He was a charter member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity at UNT. During his college years, he met and married his wife, Carolyn C. Hicks. After receiving his Master’s Degree in Education, he worked in the lower valley near Mexico until he was hired to teach in Tyler. He taught one year at Ramey Elementary and then became the first Principal at Mattie Jones Elementary in Tyler. He was then made Principal at Gary Elementary and later was moved to Bell Elementary as Principal until he retired. He was active in the education process and was involved in numerous committees within TISD and within the Cooperative Teacher’s Credit Union. Glenn is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his brothers Joe, Kenny, and Charles, by his sister Joy, and by his devoted daughter Marjolyn Hicks. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Paul and Julie Hicks. He has two grandchildren, Mark Hicks and McKensie Hicks, both of Tyler. He is also survived by numerous nephews and nieces. Glenn will be buried in Mason Cemetery at a time to be determined. In lieu of flowers, his family would like to encourage prayers for both Glenn and Carolyn as they enter into God’s Kingdom almost simultaneously. Memorials in their name are welcome to the Hospice of East Texas, Fairwood United Methodist Church of Tyler, or to any animal shelter.
