Mr. Sobel passed away on Tuesday, December 7,2010, in Tyler.
He was a lifelong member of Ahavath Achim Synagogue, where he was President and a member of the
Brotherhood and served as an advisor to the chapter of the United Synagogue Youth when his children
were teens. He was a long time member of B'nai Brith. He served his country in the Army Air Corp
during World War II.
He was born in Dallas on October 28, 1920 and moved to Tyler in the 1940's. He opened up a store on
the Tyler square and soon met his bride, Thelma. He was an honest and well loved and respected
merchant for over 50 years in Tyler, as the owner of Sobel's AAA Floor company.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Sobel was preceded in death by his brother Isaac Sobel, and sisters,
Hannah Kaplan and Gerturde Sobel.
He is survived by by his wife, Thelma Sobel, Tyler; daughter and son-in-law Michelle Sobel and Daryl Havens,
Ferndale, Michigan; daughter and son-in-law Suzanne and Sean Benson, San Antonio;
daughter and son-in-law Felice and David Silverberg, Grand Prairie; and grandchildren Ryan and Jessica Silverberg.
Pallbearers are Allan Waghalter, Stanley Waghalter, Craig Udell, Mark Udell, Ira Kaplan, Sam Roosth,
Sean Benson, David Silverberg and Honorary Pallbearer, Barry Jacobs.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in honor of Hershel Sobel may be made to Ahavath Achim Synagogue, 3501
