Leonard proudly volunteered to fight for his country in the United States Navy during World War II. He later attended Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, then in 1948 he went to work for Southwestern Bell Telephone. Leonard married the love of his life, Gilda Ackermann, in 1955. He retired from the phone company in 1988 after 40 years of loyal service. He was very active in the Church of Christ and would share his faith with anyone.
Leonard is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Gilda Gunz; sons, Roger (Kim) Gunz, of Henderson, Texas, and Curt (KeriAnne) Gunz, of Tyler, Texas; daughter, Missy (Cully) McMinn, of Tyler, Texas; grandchildren, Kelly (Brady) Marshall, Nathan Gunz, Meredith (Hunter) Martin, Kali (Jaret) King, Levi (Rachaelle) McMinn, Seth McMinn, and Caleb McMinn, Ryan (Erica) Gunz, Meghan Gunz, Jonathan Gunz, and Patrick Gunz; great-grandchildren, Max Gunz, Eli Marshall, Tanner Gunz, Rowen Gunz, Taylor Higginbotham, Jax Martin, London Hoover, and Paris Hoover.
Leonard was preceded in death by his grandson, James Wesley Gunz.
A celebration of life for Leonard will be held Monday, January 24, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at University Church of Christ, following the graveside service at 11:00 a.m. at William's Cemetery, New Chapel Hill, Texas.
