Marjorie Hagen Byrd, lovingly known to many as “Mardi,” passed away peacefully on March 14, 2026, at the age of 83. A beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to many, she lived a life marked by grace, faith, and a vibrant spirit that touched all who knew her.
Born on October 11, 1942, to Amy and Leonard Hagen, a noted concert violinist, Mardi was raised in a home filled with music, artistry, and a deep appreciation for culture. From an early age she demonstrated extraordinary talent and determination. At just 14 years old, she danced with the prestigious Joffrey Ballet and the New York City Ballet, reflecting a rare dedication and passion for the performing arts.
Her grace and presence carried beyond the stage. Representing her home state with poise, she captivated the nation at the 1964 Miss America pageant in Atlantic City, where she was honored with a prestigious Judges Award for her exceptional talent and Interview. During her time as Miss Washington, she had the distinct honor of helping dedicate Seattle’s iconic Space Needle prior to the opening of the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair, a moment that placed her at the center of a historic celebration of innovation and culture.
Mardi lived life with enthusiasm and joy. Known for her radiant personality, she had a gift for making every gathering feel like a celebration. Friends near and far share countless stories of her warmth, laughter, and ability to light up any room she entered. She carried herself with elegance, kindness, and grace, earning the admiration and affection of everyone who crossed her path.
A devoted servant of her faith, Mardi was deeply committed to her church and community. She faithfully served the congregation of Christ Episcopal Church and was an active member of the Altar Guild. Throughout her life, she dedicated countless hours to civic and charitable causes, serving on numerous boards and supporting organizations that strengthened her community. Her generosity and leadership left a lasting impact on many lives.
Above all else, Mardi’s greatest joy was her family. She shared a deep and enduring love with her cherished husband, Dan Edwin Byrd. As a mother and “Mimi,” she poured her heart into her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her family remembers her as the most graceful and loving mother and grandmother, a woman of unwavering faith whose strength and resilience guided generations.
Mardi was preceded in death by her parents, Amy and Leonard Hagen, and her beloved husband, Dan Edwin Byrd.
She is survived by her children: Amy Dowell (Travis) of Allen; Hagen Hodge (Robert) of Chandler; Sarah Olvey (David) of North Richland Hills; and J. Gib Jones (Shannon) of Round Rock. She is also survived by her stepdaughters, Marin Kelling of Houston and Megan Adcock (Greg) of Tyler. Marjorie leaves behind 16 grandchildren: Peyton Dowell, Madison Harrison (Camden), Turner Taylor, Anna Taylor, Claire Hodge, Molly Hodge, Cooper Olvey, Alan Olvey, Phoebe Olvey, Skyler Jones, Stone Jones, Garner Kelling, Avery Kelling, Mason Adcock, Owen Adcock and Thomas Adcock; one precious great granddaughter, Charlotte Harrison and numerous cherished godchildren, all of whom carry forward her legacy of love, faith, and joy for life.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Mardi’s life at a visitation on Wednesday, March 18, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Lloyd James Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 19, at Christ Episcopal Church in Tyler, Texas, followed by a graveside service and Celebration of Life.
Mardi’s life was a testament to grace, faith, and wholehearted love for others. Her spirit, laughter, and devotion to family and church will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. We will rejoice always in her heritage.
