Mary Sue Michels Standifer,58, passed away in the mid-afternoon hours on Friday, April 5, 2013 at Trinity Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler. MarySue was born on September 8, 1954 in Champaign, Illinois to Paul R. Michels and Glenagene (Wynn) Michels. She married Kenneth R. Standifer on June 7, 1986 in Sadorus, Illinois. She worked for Southland Corporation and the University of Illinois before moving to Tyler in September, 1998. MarySue received five Associate Degrees from Tyler Junior College and continued on to earn her Bachelors in History with a Minor in Anthropology from the University of Texas at Tyler on August 15, 2008.
MarySue was an active member of the Smith County Historical Society. She enjoyed researching the Caddo Indian History and painted the Caddo Indian Mural at the Society. MarySue also conducted extensive research on her family genealogy tracing it back many generations. A Texas Ranger fan, she enjoyed attending their games with her husband. An avid animal lover, her dogs, Tyler and Ranger, brought great comfort and joy to her life as did spending time with the animals at the Caldwell Zoo.
Survivors include her husband, Kenneth R. Standifer; her father, Paul R. Michels; one sister, Betty Ruth (Don) Book; two brothers; Connie E. and James K. Michels of Sadorus, Illinois; 8 nieces and nephews; 7 great nieces and nephews; and 1 great-great niece.
She was preceded in death by her mother; 1 brother, Paul R. Michels, Jr.; and 1 nephew.
Visitation will be Saturday, April 6, 2013 from 6-8 p.m. at Lloyd James Funeral Home in Tyler. A graveside service will be Sunday, April 7, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. in the Pleasant Retreat Cemetery in Tyler, Texas.
