Anita Alegret passed away peacefully on June 10, 2021 with her children by her side. She was born in Santander, Spain to Jesus and Aurora Setien, the middle child of eight siblings. Anita came into the world during the turbulent Spanish Civil War. She always recalled her childhood with great sadness and as the most miserable time of her life. Growing up in such poverty and squalor definitely left its
mark on her.
As the war ended, Anita grew into a lovely young lady. She was determined to make a better life for herself. So she joined her aunt Anita (her namesake) who taught her how to sew and she flourished as a skilled seamstress . This was a very nice trade for a woman, in those times.
At the age of 25, she met Francisco A/egret, who was travelling through northern Spain with Spanish friends from Union City, visiting their fam ilies. Francisco was immediately taken with Anita and was determined to woo her. His initial three month sojourn, quickly turned into six months . He did not want to leave Spain without her. Anita would often mention how romant iche was, always reciting poetry or singing a love song. He was the most unique man she had ever met and she liked his persistence . They married on October 15, 1959 and together they returned to Union City, to start their new life .
Anita wanted to own her own home as soon as possible, so they both worked multiple jobs to save for this goal. Before their 2nd anniversary, they were property owners! Even before DIY was commonplace, they renovated a three story single family house into a three family building.
Anita worked over 30+ years in numerous embroidery factories throughout Hudson county, as a piece sewer. With the help of many kind ladies, who trained her in embroidery, she utilized her sewing skills to hone her trade. She was well respected and sought after for the quality of her work.
Together Anita and Francisco worked long days, owned two homes, were proud parents of Ann and Steven, had good times, had bad times but through it all they built a wonderful life. They were inseparable for the 34 years of their marriage. They complimented each other, relying on the other's strengths. They shared a deep abiding love and were devoted to each other, until Francisco's death in December 20, 1993.
After her retirement and several cancer diagnosis, she enjoyed several hobbies as creative outlets. Her favorites were making Christmas wreaths, which still grace our home very year. As well as, being an avid knitter and crocheter. Many of her beautiful creations are stilled enjoyed by those lucky enough to own one.
Anita was a devout Catholic, who prayed fervently every day for her fam ily. Her faith and love resonated throughout all aspects of her life. She was a true force of nature, who would not abide injustice and sought to help anyone whenever possible. She may have had a hard start in life but that
fueled her strong character, generous heart, and compassion for others. She taught us that hard work was its own reward and a job well done was its own satisfaction. Anita will be truly missed by her children, family and friends
