

Anita was born in Weehawken, NJ on January 24, 1932, to the late John and Marie Schoening and was pre-deceased by her husband, Nicholas. Also predeceased by her daughter Elise, sister Claire and brother John. Anita grew up in Hoboken and graduated from St. Michael’s High School in 1950 and soon after went to work as a secretary in New York City. Anita worked in her father’s bakery, Uptown Bakery, and her uncle’s bakery, Schoening’s City Hall Bake Shop, both in Hoboken. On November 21, 1953, she married her high school sweetheart, Nick.
Survived by children Karen Trapani (Joseph), Robert (Cathy), and Kathleen Sabogal (Rich), grandchildren Taryn, Elizabeth, Gabrielle, Joseph, and Nicholas, great-grandchildren, Giuliana, Isabella, Jack, Amelia, Georgina and Louise.
Anita was devoted to her parish, St. Augustine’s in Union City, where she ran the C.C.D. program for many years. She was an Administrative Assistant at New York University, first in the Museum Studies Program and then in the Department of Fine Arts. She retired in 2000. Anita was an amazing wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She loved to cook and was an avid recipe cutter. Anita, along with her late husband Nick, enjoyed the Union Square Farmers Market, shopping at Balducci’s and many brunches around the West Village. She loved vacationing with her family in the Outer Banks of North Carolina and Williamstown, Massachusetts.
Family and friends are invited to the visitation on Friday, March 22, from 4:00-8:00 pm at the Leber Funeral Home, 2000 Kennedy Blvd, Union City, NJ. A funeral mass will be celebrated on March 23, beginning 10:00am at St. Lawrence Church, 22 Hackensack Avenue, Weehawken, NJ. She will be laid to rest in Mount Carmel Cemetery, 10 Serpentine Rd., Tenafly, NJ.
