Barbara E. Coffey (nee Houghtalin) of Jersey City passed away in her home surrounded by her loving family at the age of 93. Barbara was born in Beacon, New York on May 16, 1927, to Veronica (Kieslor) and Homer Houghtalin. She is predeceased by her three brothers, Thomas, Homer, and Richard and her sister, Charlotte Schmarr. Barbara's beloved mother Veronica died at the age of 28 leaving Barbara to be raised by her dear aunt, Anna Ryan Fox. In 1952 Barbara married the love of her life, Aloysius J. Coffey, a captain of the Jersey City Fire Department. They spent over 50 happy years together in Jersey City and summering at their home in Long Beach Island surrounded by their loving children and grandchildren. Her beloved Al passed away on July 2, 2007.
Barbara attended St. Paul's School and Snyder High School. She was an active parishioner at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish For many years and later at St. Paul of the Cross. Barbara was a homemaker and returned to the workforce retiring from her job at J.P. Morgan Chase in New York City. She loved to travel, read and spend time with her family at the shore.
Barbara is survived by her four loving daughters and their families: Deborah Savage and Mark Frangione of Jersey City, Kathy Biancamano and her late husband, Michael, of Washington Township, Barbara and Luis Perez of Doylestown, Pennsylvania, and Maureen and Peter Mercuri of Mountainside. She is also survived by her 8 loving grandchildren: Matthew and Melissa Savage, Luis Philip Perez, Michael Biancamano, Kaitlin Perez, Megan Perez, Andrew Mercuri, Bridget Mercuri and Grace Barbara Mercuri. She is also survived by one beautiful great-grandchild Conor Matthew Savage. Numerous nieces and nephews also mourn the death of their dear aunt. The family would like to thank Patricia Perez for the loving and compassionate care and friendship she provided Barbara for five years.
The family will receive friends on Monday, October19, from 4:00 to 8:00 for visitation at Leber's Funeral Home in Union City. On October 20th at 11:00 Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Sts. Joseph and Michael Church, Central Avenue and 14th Street , Union City. A private burial service will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery , North Arlington.
