

Carlos L. Martin died on May 10, 2009. Carl Martin, Director of Information and Publications for the New York Knickbockers, became associated with Madison Square Garden in 1956 when he joined the Promotions Dept. then under Ned Irish. Prior to outset of the 1968-69 season, he became a member of the public relations staff of the Knicks and has remained with the Knick organization ever since.
In what was to become a lifetime involement in athletics. Martin was a sports columnist and later Assistant Sports Editor of the Hudson Dispatch in Union City. Beginning with a scholastic sports beat, he later covered intercollegiate games and then moved to the professional level where he chronicled the Jersey City Giants of the International league and frequently covered World Series games involving the Yankees and Dodgers. He served as a member of the selections committee for both the North-South Cage Classic and the Eastern States Catholic Invitational Tournament. His credits also included a number of North Jersey Press Club awards and citations.
Shortly after joining the Knicks, Martin became "backup" to John Condon behind the MSG public address microphone. His role quickly expanded during the 1970's to include hockey and in 1974, he became identified as the public address announcer for the New York Rangers.
In addition to hockey and basketball he served for more than a decade on the P.A. at the U.S. Open Championship as well as many other tennis tournaments at MSG. He also served as ring announcer at many boxing bouts which included dozens at the Felt Forum in the Garden.
He was a member of the original MSG Hall of Fame committee, past president of NJ Basketball Writers Ass'n and the NJ Sportswriters Ass'n.
A native of West New York, he enjoyed a lifetime of community involvement where he led the Little League baseball team to the World's Championship finale at Williamsport, PA in1966.
Married to the former Dorothy Vecchione of West New York, and father of Kenneth and Dennis and his wife Phyllis as well as his grandson Ryan. Arrangements under the direction of Leber Funeral Home in Union City, NJ.
