
We are sad to announce the passing of James Edward Topper of North Bergen New Jersey. He was 86 years old and died on March 17, 2023. First child of Charles and Esther Topper from Berwick PA, James leaves behind his son David, grandson Alexander and sister Linda.
James attended Manhattan School of Music, Seton Hall University and St. Peter’s college with a degree in elementary education. He taught English and Social Studies for thirty-five years the majority of which at St. Augustine School in Union City. He studied piano and organ for seven years each with two years under Dr. Claire Coci, Organist for the New York Philharmonic.
James was the Organist and Choir Director at St. Augustine in Union City for more than sixty years, since 1956. He also served as Organist and Choir Director at Our Lady of Sorrows in Jersey City from 1976 to 1985 and St. Paul of the Cross from 1999 to 2011. In 1965 he was asked to perform at the New York World’s Fair as concert organist and choral director, with the Choir of St. Augustine under his direction.
James spent his retirement years as substitute teacher for St. Augustine as well as serving as organist and choir director. He will be missed by family, friends and many of the thousands of students and singers he taught throughout his life. A wake will be held at Leber Funeral Home in Union City on Monday, March 20th, from 2 to 7pm. A funeral will be held at St. Augustine Church on Tuesday, March 21st at 10:30am.
