Joan T. Flood (nee Wey), 87, was born at home in Teaneck, NJ on December 21, 1932 to Margaret Wey (nee Verdon) and Francis Wey, the fourth child of what would be a family of seven children: Francis (Helen) Wey, Margaret (Patrick) O’Day, Mildred (Daniel) O’Donovan, Clement (Rose) Wey, Christopher (Rita) Wey and Catherine (Peter) Troost. Joan, a life-long resident of Weehawken, NJ, passed away peacefully of natural causes on November 19, 2020.
For the first 50 years of her life, Joan lived on Cooper Place in Weehawken, where she and her childhood sweetheart and beloved late husband of 60 years, James R. Flood, grew up just doors away from one another and the couple raised their three children. Joan and Jim moved to Bonn Place in 1983 where they enjoyed planting roses in their front garden and hosting barbeques on their back deck. Joan, a teacher’s assistant in the Weehawken Public Schools, relished teaching and helping her young students. In her time away from work, Joan enjoyed trips with Jim to their condominium at the Jersey Shore, long drives to North Carolina to visit family and to Florida to vacation. Before retirement, Jim was a Weehawken Police Officer for over 30 years. After Jim passed away, Joan enjoyed trips on the Weehawken Senior Bus with the kind driver and all of her dear friends.
Joan is survived by a brother, Christopher Wey, a sister, Catherine Troost, a sister-in-law, Rose Wey, her children, Stephen J. (Debbie) Flood, James C. (Kathy) Flood and Diane (Marieke de Wit) Flood Taylor, in addition to her grandchildren, Christopher J. Flood, Stephen T. Flood, Kelly Cullen, Jennifer Whitaker, Patricia Flood, Caleb Flood Goldstick, Anya Flood Taylor and Ryan Flood Taylor, great grandchildren Farrah Flood, Whitney Flood, Liam Whitaker, David Flood, Aidan Cullen, Abby Cullen, and Raegan Flood and twenty-four nieces and nephews.
Joan was fond of this special quote: “And now I’m glad I didn’t know the way it all would end, the way it would go. Our lives are better left to chance. I could have missed the pain, but I’d of had to miss the dance.”
Funeral services for Joan will be private. A Memorial Mass and Life Celebration will follow at a later date.
